2.4 performance HELP!
Sunday, October 10, 2010 8:39 PM
Ok so here is the short story. I haven't been on the boards for about two years. I owned an 05 cavalier and had to sell it. Now my brother gave me an 2001 Alero with the twin cam 2.4. From previously being on the boards I figured I could come here and get some help from more knowledgeable people. I know it's not a performance oriented car, but It has a 5-speed and is fun to drive and I would just like to go to the track again on weekends and have fun, after all a free car is a free car. I have read the secret cam sticky, and it's coming as an upgrade soon, as well as HP tuners. However I am wondering how well does the 2.4 handle boost? I had an old eclipse so I have a BIG 16G turbo from an evo 3, a front mount intercooler measuring 24x8x3., a tial 38mm gate, 550CC injectors and a load of couplers pipes and other misc. My friend is a fabricator and will build me a log header for $300. I am also looking for rods and pistons, different camshaft options and what else has been done to make this engine have more go. I do NOT race on the street, i am against it as a friend got hurt severely. I also know that aleros in 2002 came with an L61 ECOTEC and even more than modifying the 2.4, how hard would it be to swap in the L61? I found a grip of them at local salvage yards, and and old buddies turned 400WHP on pump fuel. So I apologize for not having a J-body but i would just like some help. Thanks in advance.

no need to swap to an eco. you have a perfectly capable motor. it will handle boost fine. may consider doing an oil pump swap. only weak spot. other than that, do some research in the boost forum, as that's what your looking for answers for.

good luck

If you plan on building the engine anyway, then the 2.4 is more than capable. Other things you want to look into would be a 2.3 oil pump swap and HO cams rather than Secret Cams, also a High Output intake manifold. There is a lot of information available to you on this site. Good luck. The LD9 is a pretty fun motor IMO.

stock engine can handle up to 12-15 psi boost I think Levi is running on his, but yes building it will help in the long run, I only say this because noone answered what they can handle stock, Levi also ran Nitrous kit (not sure how much or type), and he ran I think 12.1 on the quarter with his cavy

As for engine internals I got a lot of my parts from TTR and picked up my ARP hardware from karo at carcustoms. Between those 2 sites you should find everything your looking for to rebuild (minus cams).

Ok now that I have some great input, where can I get 2.4 parts from? I tried looking up Car Customs and TTR but I haven't found anything. Do i need to go to the dealer for the oil pump and HO Cams and HO manifold from the dealer? I am also looking into classifieds. Another question that may sound stupid, but will the engine internals form one 2.4 swap to another 2.4 LD9? I know most engines share same numbers and castings (honda b16A1 and 2 can swap parts between engines) and the reason i ask is a friend of mine has a short block he built and never used for his cavi. it's a 2001 and it has eagle rods and custom arias pistons at 9.5:1. He was going to boost the cavi but it got broken into and damaged too far. Also what are people using for engine management? I noticed a lot use HP Tuners, but I only want something i can tune in real time. I was looking more into a Haltech E6X as I can get one for a good deal and have a great tuner here in Arizona.

Well I'm assuming you have a 2001 LD9 in your alero since its a 2001. If that is true any LD9 parts will fit (96-02). TTR has everything you need....it doesn't matter if the parts are listed under another car, just as long as they are parts for a LD9 they will work. I have heard its hard to get some of the oil pump parts these days but someone may know where to get that. As for the cams and mani you can try and find used stuff that someone is selling or try a junk yard. HP Tuners will do everything you need for tuning. Seems like you just need to spend some time searching this site, all the info your asking about is posted on here, probably numerous times.

Dealer will not have those unless in vintage division, best place is wreckers for mani, tb and bracket, as well as the cams.....oil setup better off going to wreckers, grab whats good and order new pump, 80 percent is unavailable. and yes as Matt said all LD9 can interchange only main differences is EGR, head is better from 96-98 (for compression), 99-02 blocks all the same no matter the car. TTR does have everything you could need, any questions many of us can help, Im an allmotor kind of guy but many have boosted, and if you look there are many "monster builds" on this site
