Wow its been a while. I fully build my 2.4 about 6 years ago and abandoned the project ever since. I've been itching to get it running again and started toying with it. The engine is sitting in the bay with no tranny, brakes, etc hooked up. The only thing wired is all plugs that would go to the engine. When you turn the key, it doesn't crank at all or even try. The gauges power up and you hear the fuel pump start. The starter does work, but must not be getting the signal to crank. Any ideas? Not sure if there has to be a tranny for it to work or what the issue may be. All appropriate fuse are intact...

Know of a way to override it if that is the case? It was auto, but since the tranny isnt in, it won't let you shift it into any other gears. Looks as if its in park, but not entirely sure.

Why do u want to start it without a tranny? Is it just to hear it or something? I know when I did my swap it was ground wires that were keepin it from runnin, Double check all the wires are in the appropriate places.

Ground wires seem to be alright. I'll double check later. I want to start it to be sure it runs. As of now, the only tranny I have is from a grand am. The plugs are diff, so I'm not entirely sure how I'll hook it up if I even can. Before I climb that wall, I need to know the motor works.

There's a purple wire that goes to the starter solenoid (or to the relay if the recall has been done to it). I believe it needs to have +12V on it. The purple wire would come from that safety switch, which has a yellow coming down from the ignition switch. At least that's how it looks like on a 96 wiring diagram.
Or, you might be able to just locate the actual switch, and click/tape it down, (not sure what kinda switch is on the auto ones though)

why not? I have. I would check the oil, water. Prime the fuel system and look for leaks, built some oil pressure.
It does sound like the auto switch.

id be pulling cam towers and oiling them down too.
^ agreed. dont want to dry start the thing. even that half second or whatever it is without oil can be detrimental to the parts that are metal on metal. now.. i dont know how long assembly lube is good for so i guess it could be ok if you were generous with the application of it...

I say put the tranny, brakes, and etc in the damn thing and call it done.
Id atleast crank the thing over by hand a few times to make sure it spins fine.
u can start it, just fing the big yellow wire and the big purple wire that go to the transmission shift selecter they need to be hooked together, or u could always jump the starter solenoid
As everyone else said, you'll have to rewire the neutral safety switch for the time being. Grab a diagram from whereever you can, and install a SPST switch (or simply a quick disconnect...) for the safety wires. If that doesn't fix it, grab your multimeter and check out what's going on with the starter.

Personally, I like to make sure the engine won't grenade itself due to firing after sitting in the same position for 6 years. Stuff likes to gum up, rust/oxidation forms, blah blah. Especially when it sits untouched for 6 years. I'm just saying I would look it over very well before hand.
there is a pigtail that clips into the top of the tranny has a purpple and purple/white wire jump those too and viola!

Nope. I've thought about it several times, but its so close it would be a waste. The problem now is, its been so long since I've messed with anything on it, I forgot a lot about it and what I all did to it back then... Its like I'm relearning about it. It is amazing though how much things have changed around here though. Back when I did my turbo setup, there were only like 5 other main members boosted... now I look and everyone is boosted and fully built. Amazing how many are in the j-body game now.

Nope, not at all. However, it is a pre 2k and it does need the cluster for passlock. Does it roll over at all, or nothing when you hit the key?

Thanks. When you turn the key, you hear the fuel pump kick on and everything prime up ready to go, it just wont crank. If you jump the starter, it cranks with no start. I imagine that's because there's still an issue preventing the ignition or injectors from firing, hence why it won't try to crank with the key.
