MSD problem HELP!!
Thursday, March 10, 2011 7:47 PM
Hey guys ok so here is my problem, I did some wire eliminating on the cav and now the car only will rev to half of what the rev limit is set to. At first I thought maybe some bad gas or plugs, changed both and it still does it. When I activate the two step rev limit it does the same thing only goes to half of what it is set to. so for example the rev limit on the stock computer is maxed out with hpt to i think its like 8500 or so. the rev limit on the msd box is set around 8000. when i rev the engine up it only will go up to around 4000 and it sounds exactly like a rev limit. the same with the two step its set around 5000 and will only rev to 2500. The car idles fine and revs up to said rpm fine. no missing or anything.

Oh and i am running the msd dis-2 plus. this car has been parked all winter. it ran fine last season. it also ran fine when i started it and moved it to work on it. i never reved it up that high when i moved it so i am not sure if this problem started after it sat all winter.

when i elimintated the wires it was mostly bcm stuff. the radio, reverse lights yada yada all the unessesary stuff. I opened all the harnesses and traced these wires and unpinned them. I didnt just cut them out. the only wires that where touched in the engine harness were controls for the ac and things of that nature. air bag harnesses were removed. so anyways it was all back together and then i noticed my problem. i first thought maybe a bad ground. tore it apart again and made sure all grounds and connections were tight. now this msd worked fine last year as i stated and i havent taken any of that apart when i did my wiring eliminating. it remained untouched. so im kinda thinking that maybe the ignition box has gone bad. I tried calling msd but they were closed for the day so i will call them tomorrow. so what i am getting at is if anyone else has had this half reving problem and what had to be done to fix it.

thanks guys and im open to all ideas.

i wonder if you are not getting the full signal. does that have a way to change the way it reads? for example my tach can read in different voltages i guess... did your battery go dead over winter? see if you can get into the settings and make sure its not giving you "half the signal" if that makes sense.

um i tried two different batterys both brand new. one was a 6lbs braille that i bought to run the car on. was thinking maybe it was to small to run the ignition so i put the optima back in it and it did the same thing. both are fully charged as i checked them and the alt. is also working as it reads around 14.6v with the car running. the signal thing your are talking about i dont quite understand. it is hooked up exactly the same as last year as i didnt touch anything with that.

basically.... like my tach. i can have it read different voltages based on the car. so it can read say it idles at 1000rpm. i can have the tach read 1000 rpm, or 500 rpm, by adjusting the settings in the tach. not sure if MSD does that at all.

and did you have a battery in it all winter? did the battery go dead?.
