HG2 cams which valvesprings?

Hey guys what valesprings should I use for the HG2 cams 224/224 @ .050 duration .430"/.430" lift, I've heard of some guys using LS1 beehive springs with 95# of seat pressure if true does anyone know what brand and pn?

i would assume that any LS1 spring equivilant to stock would work.... im pretty sure you need to ditch the rotators and do something with the stock shims to make the hieght less but dont quote me on that.

you could just get a mantapart dual spring setup... they are going for pretty cheap on ebay right now. $475 shipped iirc.

those come with the dual springs, titanium retainers, brand new gm locks (for 7mm 2.3 valve stem), .060 shims and custom spring seat bases. its worth it for sure... ive got a set up and its very nice. average seat pressure on mine were 115# at 1.347 installed hieght.

I bought a set of those dual springs from ebay, they are nice. I also have a set of LS1 springs that I was going to use. Brad is right you need to ditch the rotators and have the spring seat on the head machined down. I did not get to try and put it all together to see how it would work out. It would have 95lbs seat pressure at 1.8 install height with the springs I bought. I however decided that the mantapart duals seemed like a better setup to go with.

for the money, the LS1's would be a cheaper option than the manapart setup but you also get so much more with the mantapart setup...

now... you CAN shim up the stock HO springs if you like. i believe you can use up to an .030 shim underneath before coilbind becomes a problem. i cant remember if it was .450 lift that it bound or .500 but i know that i was saying to myself 'why the hell doesn't anybody just shim the damn stock springs and be done with it?'

cryotreat and oil shed coat the springs, shim them up... trick titanium retainers from our good ole buddy clyde moore (mitdr774) and they should be good to go.

obviously this is all in concept... you'll definitely need to have everything checked and re-checked by a machine shop to confirm all of this. every head is different.. just grinding you're valves messes up the installed height of the springs.

precision, precision, precision. ALWAYS look at the details.

I thought that the stock HO springs were only good up to .430 lift as far as coil bind goes without shims. I read that several times on Q4F.

I almost did the vw setup but it coil binds after .430 lift and my cams are .439. To the OP that would be a great alternative.

brandon, you can contact tim on ebay (owner of mantapart). im pretty sure the set-ups are made to order. i could be wrong though... i guess if he told you he was out, then yep he is out!

but to be honest... if you have the money, id go with blaga's setup.

cory, i forgot to mention... we tested the HO springs on an LD9 head. it has a different installed hieght than a quad head so thats why...

Thanks guys I'll get those springs and retainers they look like they're exactly what I need for my cams.

Hey Boosted what's been up I see you're selling the Z24 in the pic above, what's your new combo, also can you tell me where I can get a base tune for my turbo setup?

I love my supertech vw springs... been working great since day 1 on my 430 cams. and its not that expensive, you dont NEED the rotators..can always just use the shims. the setup i did i wanted to keep my rotators..hence the reason for the spacers

Sorry Scott just saying cause back when I asked you about your valvetrain setup you hestitated to provide the specs.....the whole time I thought they were LS1 springs.

dale, yea that car has been replaced check out photo and media for my build on the new car. also hit ryan up pnp tuning and see if he can help you out with a base tune.

dohc to my understanding is scott use to run ls1 springs but have recently replaced that setup with the dual spring vw setup..

Another quick question since these Supertech VW sprints have 125# of seat pressure what did you guys do on initial startup and breakin of new cams and lifters, I'd sure hate to wipe my expensive and hard to find HG2 cams? I'm thinking either use my new HO springs for initial breakin or use the Supertech's with the inner spring removed for initial breakin then put the inner springs back in, what do you guys think?

ive never heard of going with less spring pressure for break in procedures?

id say go with some break in oil... but god i cant think of anything else?

...yeah so did i.

either way they are only good for around 85psi per the rocket parts catalog specs....

with a set of titanium retainers and lightweight lifters that might cut it for HG2's...
