I know I already posted this in Maintenance but I didnt get a response and I figured I put it in a different section:
After getting a "random misfire" again in my 97 Sunfire GT for the second time in a month I was pretty pissed. About a month ago I put brand new spark plugs in and from the junkyard put in coil packs, and coil pack housing. It started misfiring again yesterday and I couldnt find the problem. So I went to a friend, who is a Gm Certified Master Tech, and has worked with GM for about 20 years or more. He had a scan tool and it read "random misfire" along with a P0420 (which has been on the car for a while now). We took the IDI cover off and the first thing he says is "I bet its that housing. When this QUAD motor came out, it had a recall on the Coil Pack Housing due to arching." We run up to Advance Auto and get a new housing and plug boots (since they have never been replaced). Problem solved
Anyways, the point of this post is I was wondering if anybody had ever heard of the Coil Pack Housing ever being recalled on the LD9/QUAD motor?
Funny you bring this up. Last year I changed the housing, "just because it was old" to a new AC Delco housing, it lasted about 6 months ok (felt a little iffy in the top end) Well, this year I changed the spark plugs in Feb, and the car was miss-firing all over the rev-range. I thought of lowering the gap from 0.050 to 0.035, but that would be a band-aid fix. So I changed the coil packs and housing and kept the plugs at 0.050. And all is perfect, better than new.
I bought the Delphi version which was lower priced than AC-Delco (I know both are basically the same company). But the two are different in design, Delphi's is wayyy better made. I have some pics for the comparison too.

so are you telling me that in 6 months or so Im going to have the same problem all over again? Mind you, my car is completely stock.
I hope it doesn't happen again. I use my Sunfire for work and anytime its down, I lose money. I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you very much for the info
I through like 3 or 4 of them within a months time a couple years ago. Couldn't find one that was any good.
Had a couple that would arc through the first time it was started. You could actually see the black spots on the housing where it was arcing.
I assume it must have been a manufacturing defect caused by bubbles or other contaminants in the plastic when they were molded.

I got tired of mine going bad, so I switched to the MSD swap, problem solved.
i've replaced 2 or 3 in the 6 years i've owned my Z. the current one has been in there for like 3 years, but i think its shot again. P0300's piss me off.

Oh I had no P0300's, just sputters/stutters when I would hit the gas.
the BWD coil pack housing is the same as the delphi one... and it comes in black. I have had it on my car now for about 3+ years. Not a problem. Mr. Goodwrench, what are you using for insulating the coil boots?

Ender, Learned something new. AC Delco now-a-days doesn't make almost anything anymore.
Freelancer. Good to know. The insulations are from Rksport, i don't know if RKS still sells it. But it is basically hightemp rubber hose packed in with fiberglass. It also came with less restrictive springs for the boots and coils (8).

The one I got from Advance Auto was black and made by BWD along with the BWD coil packs themselves. Also got Champion spark plugs (probably not the best) and Autolite spark plug boots. So aside from the ICM, everything is brand new. Knock on wood **taps head**, its running fine.

I didn't realise there were so many different ones, especially the Black BWD one. I work at Autozone, and got tired of switching CB9's (the Wells part#) every 6 months or so. I had one that seemed to go bad within a month, which drove to the MSD Swap. Now if I can only get it to idle better....
I would never use the black ones. Known of too many of them to fail.
I still have my orginal one with roughly 120k on it and was working fine when i swapped it out because I thought I had a issue. I even swapped coils, and even did 2200 coil swap. I went back to factory (just used the newer one, white). I would not hesitate to put the orginal back in.

I've had issues with the coil pack housing my self. I've been telling myself to do the MSD coil swap or LN2 coil swap but I've still yet to do it. But yeah that housing is a bad design. To much heat generated in that area in between the cam towers. Spark plug "WIRES" for the win!

Thanks Mr. Goodwrench. I believe RK still sells them. I thought that was what they were. I will be picking up a set soon.

Here is where I found the info when I did the swap, was pretty straight forward, and reversible (I'll need a new Coil to ICM cable though)
