Resetting ECU after install
Sunday, May 08, 2011 2:37 PM
Now, I wasnt sure how to answer this when my buddy asked:

He's never installed an intake before, so i went to help him out with his mazda.
He was wondering about resetting his ECU to 'learn' about the new part-

When i installed mine, i never did this, and all worked fine-
Question is-

Is this part of the installation process?
Should this be done?
Is there any benefit to doing so?

Just asking
I never flashed my ECU, never heard of anyone resetting their ECU after an intake install; but he suggested that he read it on a mazda forum.
With a bolt on like that; i never thought to disconnect my battery- so ECU never got reset.

I understand that i SHOULD have- But i was younger/ inexperienced.
My question is- Does the new force of air outweigh the stock force enough to warrant the reset.

very easy question; very easy answer.

I doubt you would have any issues but why wouldnt you just incase? Unhook the battery go to bed, hook it back up in the morning and drive off to work, problem solved!

Technically, with any install of anything, the first step is usually disconnect the battery. Doing this will inadvertently reset the ecu.

It technically shouldn't make a difference if it was disconnected or not.

and if you have driven more then around the block since you have done this, your ECU has relearned all it needs too.

but yes, i always disconnect the battery before i do anything. i usually take the damn thing out to clear up space.

Unhook battery
Stand on brake pedal for 30-45 seconds
Hook battery back up
Start the car, let it idle for a bit.

i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick
