Interest in another GP for a Griffin Radiator?
Tuesday, May 10, 2011 2:42 PM
Well I need to replace the radiator on my Z24.

Im looking to get an all aluminium radiator so I contacted Griffin. The guy stated he might have the original one for the previous group buy. Told me to call him back tomorrow. But aside from that he can still get one made.

Im just posting this in case any one else is interested maybe we can get a group buy going to lower the price. He said for one Im looking at aroung $500.00

Well if I recall, they would be better off doing a whole new design of one... I know Darkstars fought his for atleast 4 times... and in the end I still dont remember if they ever got it right.... I would EVENTUALLY be interested, but for now, stock is working out great!

500? Our first batch was 420 or so shipped. Ah well, cost goes up in everything I guess.

He was in the group buy, and it was the fan mounting, the water necks on it were not the right size or in the right location, many many issues. It had to go back a ton of times and I still dont think it was ever right...

Im glad I posted....i would hate to run into issues like that.

If stock is working great for you at your hp numbers then im sold with a less expensive stock replacement.

Still running one fan? I heard around about the nbody dual fan upgrade....

im still running stock radiator, stock fan, only modification to the coolant system is the aluminum overlfow tank with a little more capacity. Runs great and stays plenty cool.

for once i am in agreement with vince... the stock system works just fine.

the griffen is little more a novelty and a 'looks cool' mod IMO.

i would disagree it as a "novelty" or "looks cool " mod. i feel it serves its purpose well but i would also take into fact the weather where you are at . down here in FL it gets really humid'y ( if thats a word ) hot and since i changed out my stock rad for the griffon it def noticed a big change in engine temps. it takes alot longer to get hot and generally runs cooler which is nice

and thats with the stock fan and thermostat

Yea it made a big difference when I had it as well. The WHOLE thing is aluminum, which is more area that can be cooled unlike the stock radiator which has the plastic end tanks.

Sadly, a month after I installed my Griffin, I broke it

I got one for you then

explain why turbo LS1's for the most part run the stock radiator over aluminum replacements? ill tell you, the plastic actually has more efficient heat transfer because it doesnt conduct so much of the heat itself. (this coming from a 9.144 twin turbo street firebird. He drives the thing to work, races at the track, does whatever, all on stock radiator.

on the flip side, a thicker core would be about the only upgrade, but stock can handle a lot for ours.
the important part of cooling is the fins, not the end tanks... aluminum end tanks dont get enough air flow for them to cool the coolant. they are basically just the manifold and reservoir for the coolant to pass through. but put a thicker core in it and you might gain some but for me, not gain enough to justify the price of one.

Its all about personal preference. Plus it looks a whole hell of a lot better with a massive thick core.

I got another stock replacement in mine, its 1" thick unlike the one that came with the car from the factor that was only 1/2" thick WTF

this!!! plus we are not LS1 cars that are actually fast from the factory.....we are econo-boxs trying to go fast. last i checked quite a few Fast JBOS are running aftermarket radiators

but in the end it is about personal preference and my preference is griffon hands down

true, but at the same time, they are making way more heat than we are...

it all boils down to personal preference...until I see temps above normal, i prefer stock.

if ur worried about engine temps... throw in a cooler thermastat.

Re: Interest in another GP for a Griffin Radiator?

I also agree that the stock system works fine. I live in Fl with boosted cars and no issues. I would like to have a nice looking radiator, but not at $500.00.

I also know of people who have run import aftermarket radiators as well. I have thought about this.

I'm not saying there is not plus to one of these radiators, just that it is not really needed.

i could really see doing a full aluminum rad as a weight reduction mod... IF, IF you did a small one like a honda has. ...bout half the size of ours...

but when our stock rad means about 5-10 pounds is it really worth it?

You guys are forgetting the MASSIVE CFM fan that comes with the Griffin that is WAY better than our shi tty stock ones. Of course the stock setup is fine, but if your a track car you can not go wrong with the Griffin/ SPAL fan setup that wiill cool your car down faster than stock while your waiting to run. Once I get tuned I will try to show how fast my car cools down with just one run of the fan when I turn it on. My car goes from 195 temps to 183 temps in a matter of a couple of minutes.

Now that I have a stock replacement in there I will be keeping it, I have that with the SPAL fan and works fine.

was just going to ask, then why not just run a spal fan on stock rad? cheaper and just as efficient...

im just gonna toss out, im not sure you need it. even at my level im still stock rad/fan combo and it doesnt cause any issues at all.... still runs stock temps. I mean your money, but its not something you will see gains from in lower levels.
