Hey,
My car has been in the garage since 2008. I put approx 300-500 miles a year on it. Why this is important is because treadware isn't an issue for me. Price... well I don't really want to spend $200 per tire either. I really like the Yokohama Advan Ad-08. Its not cheap. I recently came across the Hankook RS3. Great reviews and sticky tire. Falken Azensis RT-615, Toyo R888, Nitto NT-01. Okay. Some of these I listed are competition weekend racing tires. I don't plan to track or drive the car in the rain. I just want some super sticky street tires to give me all the possible grip. If the tires last 10 K, 20 K, no prob. So, what sticky tires do you guys like? Also, on a seperate note I want to step up to 225/45/17's from the 215/40/17's on my 17 X 7 rim. I have a 1.75 inch drop. Is this doable without rubbing issues?
Thanks guys!

toyo ra-1's lasted me 15-20k miles and are DOT leagal.
My previous set of tires were RT-615, brand new the handling and cornering were simply sick. Traction from a dead stop was pretty decent but since the sidewall was really stiff it wasn't optimum. Last year I started to look around for a new set of tires and checking reviews online. I ended up buying Continental ExtremeContact DW in the same exact size as my Azenis (225/50/16). Cornering and steering response was inferior than the RT-615 because of the lesser stiff sidewall. Ride comfort & tire noise were by far improved. Dry traction is simply superb but where this tire shines is really under wet conditions. Not joking what so ever, those tires have equal traction under wet or dry conditions. I'm running a supercharged Eco with ''some'' power and I can still punch it without any worries when the road is wet. I am now totally sold to those ExtremeContact DW's. I do not think there is another tire in the same category with a better bang for the buck ratio.

First off, 225/45/17 is the correct size for a tire for the 17" rim. The other REALLY close tire is 235/40/17.
Second, I run the Falken Azenis RT-615K's this year. Last year was just the regular 615 model. I got a solid 2 years out of them. Not to mention running mid 12's on them... So to me they are super sticky and lasted long for me considering I drag raced on them. I love mine, I never complain about road noise well because I like hearing my stereo or the engine itself. The new models are improved tread patter and material. Im excited to have them as DD tires.
Lastly, you gotta pay to play, you want sticky tires, they are going to cost you. Thats just how it goes. You cant expect good tires for dirt cheap prices and expect them to last.
I like the Continental ExtremeContact DW and the Toyo RA-1's. Nice choices guys.
BUILTNBOOSTED, did you notice a difference in more traction with the RT-615K's compared to the RT-615's? Mid 12's.... you suck
. Can anyone of you guys look into the HANKOOK RS3's for me please. Tell me what you think compared to the tires you guys mentioned so far that you are using. I will be going up to 225/45/17's.. good to know!
"FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DRIVE STOCK"
like i said 225/45/17 is the correct 17" tire size. They might have better traction, might not, I know I could do a 3rd gear burnout on my old ones, but tried it on these new ones, and it was a no go...
Jumping in here...
how do you know how stiff the sidewalls are on the tires? I think the A rates how "sticky" they are, right? but is there a rating on sidewall stiffness?

Yokohama advans, not bad at all.

you can tell by the compounds used, not to mention feeling or looking at them.I wish I had a pic but the insides of my new ones have cross hatch of the nylon on the insides that you can see all the way around, not to mention just pushing on the tire itself. biggest way to see is driving.
The letter on the tire is the treadwear, typically, the more grip it will have, the lower the treadwear rating.... i think my new azenis are 200 treadwear... the higher the number, the less performance oriented you get.
I am glad some one brought this up... I currently have 215/35/18's nitto extreme's on my Zennetti Vega's. I want to go with a bigger tire to have better traction and handling. I was thinking of going with 225/40/18 not sure of the brand yet. Any input?
I just started running Falked ZE912's, hella sticky! I still have rock pebbles stuck to them. Maybe because their brand new? I dunno, but they sure are sticky. They are very quiet. I got them for 98.00 per tire. Rebate and discounts from discount tire.

dunlop direzza star specs are popular with the autox crowd. kumho xs is another good option from what I've heard.

I was just about to suggest dunlop star specs. They're great in the wet as well. Plus, $140 a tire (average price) and 200 tread wear is a bargain. Good luck and let us know what you choose.
And I think tire rack has rebates for those tires.

Thanks Chelotus. The dunlop direzza star specs are a good tire but I read somewhere that the General UHP Exclaim outperformed it. The General has a great tread design and performance to back it up for a great price.
I didn't think the Falken ze912 would be that sticky..interesting. So far I am leaning toward the Hankook RS3
Great reviews and $ 120 per tire!! I also really like the RT-615K's. Im still researching.

i have the falken ziex 512's and cut a 2.19 60 ft with them my very first night ever at the track with stupid amounts of wheel hop, i think i could get a 2.1 if i could just get the wheel hop under control, thats not too bad if you ask me, and i have gotten probably 35-40,000 out of them so far, they are also one of the lightest weight tires i could find, the only thing i dont like about them is the super soft sidewall, but i will probably be getting them again
grassroots ran a tire test last year.... rankings were as follows.
dunlop direzza star specs
kumho xs
hankook rs3
falken rt615k
I'd love to see the article where the General's outperformed the star specs. i'm just a bit skeptical on that one...

Tried to find it this morning but all I find is how much better the Star Specs are compared to the General! lol...So you must be right on that one. Anyone like the EAGLE F1 GS-D3?

I dont run the best tires at the moment, but I do keep up with the tires that were mentioned above. The reasoning behind my madness is: If I can drive fast with cheap/crappy tires, then I would be ridiculous in a great tire. (Autocross)
I still reccommend the star specs. On another note, a friend of mine drove on rs3s and I was told that it lasted no more than 20k. I dont know how long the dunlops will last on a daily. (Rs3s are 140 tread wear).

sticky tires,
Toyo R1R's basically R-comps with tread cut in them, talk of getting banned in street tire classes in the SCCA
Hannok whatever their top tire is, actually banned in SCCA street tire classes because the treadwear rating is so low
Bridgestone RE11 I'd have bought these if I had more money
Dunlop Z1 star specs, just a tad slower than the RE11's, better daily driver tire than all above, last the same ~2 years as the RE11's but quieter and better in the rain.

A buddy of mine runs bg goodrich g- force kdw2 on his srt4 and he loves them very sticky kind of loud driving though
I run nitto nt555 extreme zr and I have no complaints very good tire all around has definitely out performed my other sets
Very satisfied with this tire and will continue putting them on all my cars and I only paid 417.00 for all four of them at this size
225/40z/r18 good luck
Thanks. The BF Goodrich tires mentioned are sticky and loud I have heard as well. Anyone like the Hankook RS3? YOYO T1R is a nice tire. Its one if my options. Any others opinions?
"FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DRIVE STOCK"
My g-forge kdw2's sucked at the track and are loud on the street.
i love how people complain about loud tires lol. only loud tires ive ever heard are on a double lifted jeep with super swampers... i cant say i ever listen to tires on my car while driving, thats what i have the radio and exhaust for...
I have an opinion, but take it as you wish.
In my profile I have listed my tires, a 225/45/17, also on a 7" wide wheel. They are Maxxis MA-Z1 Summer Performance. The Tread wear rating is 280. These have been amazing tires. I have roughly 7k on them. They are wearing without question, however, I see getting maybe 20k at the most out of them. Probably closer to 17k. I have yet to break these tires loose. They are a little on the noisy side, but not like BF Goodrich tires. They are sticky, sticky. I have hit pot holes by accident, and I don't have an issue with tire belts or anything. These tires are just, awesome. I know you said you don't drive in rain, but I would like to add for others who read this thread, rain traction is just as amazing as dry. I have not hydroplaned at all, and can take corners just fine with them as well.
Now, here's why I say take this as you will. They cost about $80-90/tire. HOWEVER, their quality is WONDERFUL.
If you don't recognize the name, then your probably not a ATV/Motorcycle/Hard Core Biker type guy. Maxxis has been making tires for many many years. They are HUGE in the ATV world. In fact they are probably the best ATV tire. They also make motorcycle tires, street bike guys swear by them. As well as off-road bikers (I'm talking like mountain biking). Also, the exact tires I have are used in the Drift world, and perform great. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe they are being used on the Viper drift car, as well as many others.
All I can say is don't be scared by the price. I know when these go, I'll be getting another set. I love them. And of course, the price is right on.
