exhaust system issue. please help!
Tuesday, May 10, 2011 12:19 PM
I have a 05 sunfire, riding on KYB adjustables. I also am running 2.5" piping with a pacesetter header. I recently just went from a suspension tecniques 1.2 drop to a 1.8 drop by Canuck motorsports. Now my exhaust clunks and clangs underneath the car every time I go over a bump. Is there anything I can do? or am I looking at a new exhaust and header?

Look under the car and find out where it is hitting. Youll be looking for rub marks on the pipe and the underside of the car.

Is it coming from up front or the rear over the rear axle?

My guess is that its over the rear axle that is the problem area.

I had to take mine apart (going from stock to 1.8" drop) and have it re-hung correctly to elminate the clanging.

Doubtful that you have to actually replace anything, unless there is a broken hanger or something. If you're not running a solid motor mount setup, you should have a flex pipe welded into the exhaust up front as this can cause some issues also.

i don't have a flex pipe. it's 1 hard pipe down. it seems like it's hitting the header to downpipe flange, and also that area on the rear axle. I will try to rehang it. However, should i also unbolt the header as well? It's really worrying me, the amount of clanging there is =(

Funny enough, this ONLY started AFTER I lowered it more. Before it was all ok.....T_____T

90% chance the over axle part is hitting the trailing arm. Mine does it, annoys the hell out of me. Im just to lazy to adjust and fix it.

one thing I also noticed since lowering it, is that vibration in-cabin has increased, due to something in the exhaust system constantly touching the chasis >.<

Ugh, this is so annoying. And REALLY worrisome at times 'cuz it bangs when it impacts >.<

Anyhow, if anyone can tell me, should I take the header off too when I'm adjusting? THanks!

I didnt have to unbolt the header from the head when i adjusted mine. I unbolted the flange that connected the header to the downpipe (loosened it rather) and made adjustments as best as i could.

I had to have the welds and the piping "re-clocked" to rotate the whole thing upwards.

it was only like $100 to have the work done and it stopped making noise.
