Hi I'm new and think this might be the right place to ask this, i have a 96 sunfire 2.2 auto don't rag it was given to me now i put on a short ram intake and i took off the factory muffler and put on a 26 in glass pack i.m not doing this to race just added sound and a little fun, you wouldn't believe the heads the sound turns... anyway to the main question... when i toss the car in 1st gear and take of to red line i get a wheezing sound from the exhaust when i let of the gas , if i shift to 2ed gear and gun it it chirps the wheels rev it up to red line let off and the wheezing sound comes back... it only makes this in 1st and 2ed at redline rpm any clue what makes this and how to fix?? also i want to do a 3.4 swap and 5 speed or ecotech swap one day.. to hear what the car sounds like with out the wheezing look up stylinwiley on youtube,

that poor 2.2

And you shouldn't shift an auto like a manual unless you have a shfit kit.
the 2.2 will take it. it's the 3t40 I'm worried about... (i'm assuming that's what he's got)

And your wheezing sound is probably from your glass pack. Is it clamped on or welded on?

it is welded and it did this with the stock muffler on. well i can,t say it is red line rpms but it is high rpm. how would i check to see if it is a 3t40. im thinking that the stock piping is to small looks like it is 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 in. are the cat is kinda clog.

I wouldn't red line that motor unless built to do that but as far as the wheezing goes check the welds for leaks and if the oe flex pipe is still on the exhaust system inspect that for ne leaks mine made a nasty noise before I upgraded the system ne leaks will sound horrible small or large hope this helps good luck

A) just because the ecu will let you red line that engine doesn't mean you should.
B) cherry bomb is @!#$! period! step up to a proper system like magna flow or flowmast
C) if you would accept some decent advise no body would flame!

1) I said the ecu will "NOT" let and auto after the year or 94 go to redline but the peak hp is at 4800 rpm and red line is 5000.
2) would you like to give me the cash for it? i said i didn't do this for speed just looking if anyone new why it was whezzing it any others do this with stock piping then im ok with it just like to know if my cat is clog maybe, this is a @!#$ car it needs paint carpet and body work i,m not going to spend big bucks into just to keep it on the road,
3)noe one have said its the stock piping or the cat or the header which would lead to decent advise all post but one or two on here are flams or what i like to call trolls.
4) if you cant see that then that makes your the moron and a ass to boot.

Wayne, one thing I know from all I've seen over the years is that the more free-flowing the exhaust is (Unrestricted & open to the atmosphere) the more noise will result as the crank-speed slows while the engine is under-load after the throttle is closed. This is commonly known as "back-rap"... The result of air actually entering the system through the tailpipe outlet & mixing with the unburned fuel in the exhaust, then igniting inside the last few inches of the pipe. The more "open" the system is, the more pronounced it gets. Keep in mind that a glass-pack muffler is a "straight-through" design, meaning it has no baffles of any sort to hinder the flow of gases as they pass through it... No matter which direction they're flowing in. But still... Since you said it existed before you installed the Cherrybomb, I'd say it's most-likely a leak somewhere forward in the system. Having worked in a exhaust shop, I can say one thing that's most-commonly replaced on FWD cars is the flex-pipe... That funny little piece with steel-braiding on it, located between the manifold/header and the catalytic-converter. It's easy to replace, relatively inexpensive & sounds like most worth doing.

BTW: Why are you "lifting" when you go to change gears manually with an automatic? Even under full-load, that's not necessary.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".
