Lifters, lifters and more lifters! (Quad Family)

welp, finally got the camera out and wanted to show the differences in our lifter options when doing the HO or W41 cam swaps the right way.

there are three different options you can get for the quad 4, and sadly... they ALL have the same part number so when you order make sure you take them all out of the boxes and confirm that they are in-fact the same. why? because they all weigh different. ALL WEIGHTS DONE ON SAME SCALE, ALL LIFTERS BRAND NEW, ALL LIFTERS HAVE ZERO OIL INSIDE THEM.

when i refer to them this is how...

V1 (version 1, aka stock GM style)
V2 (version 2, aka the "lightweight" style)
V3 (version 3, aka the coated style)

pics:

from left to right...V1, V2, V3

see... exact same part number. sealed power 2236.

VERSION 1

VERSION 2

V2

V2

---------------------------------------------------------------
VERSION 3:

V3

V3 COATING:

for reference... LD9 on left, quad 4 on right. (33mm vs 35mm)

2.4 cam tower... reference to show the 35mm lifters do not fit.

...and just because some have argued that keeping the LD9 lifters while doing HO cams is better because they are lighter.

sorry... WRONG. (well, if you use V2)

proof = LD9 is the one furthest left (33mm vs. 35mm):

By that im guessing he would mean by using replacement HO/W41 lifters instead of used ones or sticking with LD9 33mm lifters.

Good pics though. I havent come to the point of buying new lifters yet so i was not aware that all the different versions of the quad4 lifter have the same part number; So thats something good to to be aware of for any buyer.

gary- when you use the 35mm lifters/2.3 springs etc is what i meant. didnt mean it all has to be brand new.... lol

So if they all havde the same part number how do you ensure you get the one you want?

So LD9 is the second lightest? Seems the most reasonable route.

Agreed! Its the right way because LD9 springs that will take the higher lift of the HO and W41 cams are far and few between. And as we have found out the LD9 lifters will rub on the 2.3 springs at that lift.

the only way to ensure getting the ones you want is to look at each one individually and confirm it. if you have to send some back then you have to... this would only be a problem if ordered on line. if you get some of the ones you dont want at ur local parts house then you can just tell em they are wrong and they will send em back to whoever they get em from. then just order however many more.

realistically it be better to order 32 (two sets), gives you that many more chances to get the correct ones.

I assume these are also dry weight (no oil)?

The dry weight difference between the V1 and V2 for a whole set is 0.59 lbs. Thats quite a bit! I wonder if any place in particular is more apt to have one style over the other.

^^^ my thoughts exactly. 240 grams is a LOT off the valvetrain. thats nearly half the weight of a frickn rod!

couple that with titanium retainers, 2.3 oil pump swap, lighter forged pistons, and lighter rods with a gutted crank and you've got a VERY substantial weight decrease. and with as heavy as our rotating assemblies are id say thats one hell of an improvement.

I need this. Thanks Brad. So what are the differences between the 3 as far as performance in your opinion. I know light weight lifters in my lumina tick for about 30 min after starting.

I remember going through the motions of buying/returning 2 times to get all lightweight ones. Never thought of posting comparisons. Good on ya Brad!

I'm having an extremely hard time finding the lightweight lifters. I've ordered 32 from Napa and 16 from RockAuto, and ended up with 4 total lightweight lifters. I've got 16 more coming from O'Reilly's and 16 from Advance Auto, so fingers crossed.

And one last piece of information, you seem to be able to tell which lifter you're getting by where they are made, the lightweight and coated lifters are made in Mexico, and the heavy lifters are made in China.

Judging by Brads pictures, it looks like the heavy 'V1' lifters also come from Mexico.

Interesting because all the lifters I've received that were made in China were the V1's.

Brad, how sure are you that you kept the boxes straight?
