i have a 99 and a 96 i want to put the 2200 engine into the 96 . is it as easy as it seem just pull the engine and engine harness out of the 99 and drop it in or is there more to it ? also the 99 is a 3speed and the 96 is a 4 speed .

Ok here is the options:

Pull the 99 motor and tranny and engine harness and swap into the 96.

OR,

Pull the 99 motor, use the 96 tranny, engine harness. You will need to wire in the 99 injector harness to the 96 harness. I have done this swap like this before.

Yes you could, but you need to run the tranny that matches it. So to run that ECU, you need the motor, tranny, ECU, and wiring harness. So you will be a 3 speed.

How would you bypass the camshaft plug in on the 96 wiring harness? From my understanding, the 1998+ 2200's dont have a CPS, and the 1996 reads off of the cps to run(i think). Or do i just not need to plug it in anywhere, and it will run fine?

And if i swapped the bad 96 motor with a 1998-1999 2200 motor, tranny, and wiring harness, would it be plug and play for the engine harness&pcm? in other words, from the firewall to the rear of the car is the same from 1996-1999 for the 2.2 as far as wiring is concerned?

The '98-later LN2 uses a crank-position sensor and a cam-position sensor... And the trigger-wheel the crank-sensor reads off of is advanced several degrees in the later engine, and merely swapping the sensors--which can't be done, because they're different too--won't change that. The ECM must be programmed for the difference, or it'll not fire the injectors or the ignition at the proper moment.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

what if i used a 98-99 whole wiring harness and pcm? would it work then?

With all else being the same between the two cars in question (donor & recipient)... Yes.

I have put a 2001 LN2 into a 96 car and ran if off the 96 ECU. it can be done without reprogramming.
