Hey, I'm wondering which is a harder swap, a 1996 2.2L to ECOTEC or to z24? I know I will get flaming saying, "If you can't tell which is harder, then you don't have the ability to do the swap." But, I plan on using whichever is easier and finding the affordability, if I can't afford it, I won't do it. If I can, I'll figure out how to do the swap.
2.4 because you don't have to swap as much wiring.
its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa

this ... 2000 is the magic year where things became easier to do swaps between all the motors..
Also Z24 does not stand for 2.4 ... Some Z24s had 2.3s. 3.1s, and 2.8s.

I'm in the same boat, i have a 1999 that i've never had any intentions of modifying, but the idea of an ecotec swap is interesting. The how-tos i've seen don't mention how much wiring is needed to be done on the pre-2000s. I have digital odometer, but am curious as how much mroe needs to be re-wired. Also, is there a huge headache to converting to manual transmission?
Oh and sorry for the thread-jack OP.
OP: The 1996 will need to swap the engine harness with a 1996-1998 2.4's. I would also assume the ecu would need to be swapped with a 1996 ONLY Z24 one. You will also want to have the 2.4 transmission. The 2.2 transmission will not bolt up. Also... if you are an automatic... stay automatic... Search "5-speed to auto swap". You will see why, lol. Also... Also read through the swap because I bet more things will have to be swapped if you have the 3-speed automatic transmission. If I missed anything guys... feel free to add on my post.
Brett... you will most likely have to swap everything except the fuel tank, lol. If you have the plastic fuel tank... then your good. You will have to swap th entire interior/body harness, the ecu, the cluster, the transmission, and the entire nine yards. Search and you will find it. If you are a manual... then look up "isuzu to getrag swap". If you are a 4 speed 4t40e... then you still will need the ewcotec trans, but a lot easier... if you are the 3 speed... then search.
you do not have to swap the tank on a 99 the 99 uses 40-250 ohm resistance like the 00+ 98 you need to swap

99 was a bastard year all the way around...
