Uncommon or Rare via VIN?
Sunday, September 18, 2011 8:58 PM
Just throwing this out as a conversation starter

So now that these cars have all been extensively driven, is there anything about any of them that is considered 'uncommon' or 'rare' due to limited production that can be identified by the VIN?
Is there a particular production run, in a particular location that was special?
Is there a particular production run that seemed to be better or worse than others?(going by the sequential number at the end)
Which cars have proven more reliable in the long run, US VINs or Mexican VINs?

Sidenote: I came across one with a lead 3 of 4G2 on the VIN. I know 1G2 is US and I think 3G2 is Mexico. Is 4G2 Canada? I couldn't find it on the Wikipedia guide for GM VINs, which seems to have pretty good coverage across the board.

VIN Decoding

As for know by the VIN. Not sure. Some colors are more uncommon than others.

Sunfire colored interior is rare (White, Red, and Teal).

LN2 with a 4speed is no very common.

4 door Z24's are not common.

4 door Eco's with a 5 speed not common.

lol if you have to ask you've probably never had to check the fluid level on a 4 speed. The next easiest way is count the numbers on your shifter. 4 speed will have D 3-2-1 and the3 Speed will have D-2-1.

The remark about checking the level on a 4 speed was because none of them have dipsticks. Ive seen people have them tapped out if they had the transmission out of the car/replaced but stock as far as I know none of the 4T40E 4 speeds have dipsticks except maybe the 2002s that are coupled with the 2.2 ecotec. in 03 they switched to a 4t45E which I do believe has one.

So if you have a dipstick and stock tranny its most likely a 3 speed.

Ive never seen a sunfire with the colored interior that wasn't in a 95/early 96(im assuming you mean the cross stitch pattern in the seats?) I always guessed they were just leftover material from earlier cars.

so my dad's 4-speed LN2 is uncommon. no it's really not, a lot of 4-door auto sunfires had the 4-speed I've noticed, same with some of the 2-door ones. at least, that's what I've noticed up here.

Cayenne Red Metallic cars are somewhat rare. only produced for 2 years I believe it was.

I need a new sig.

Some of this might be based on region. In fl it is not common to find a LN2 with a 4 speed auto.

Also uncommon anywhere is a j made withoujt a/c.

Canada is about the only place you will find cars without ac, I guess it was an option.

I have seen only one thrid gen with no factory A/C.
LN2, five speed, and it didn't even have rear defrost.

The Reaper was made with no A/C. Only one I ever seen, I know Jim search long and hard to find one without.

Wow thats actually really nice. I had no idea they made colored interior like THAT. lol n here my dumbass is talking about grey seats with a red tint haha. Is that your car? Its really nice in my opinion even though Im not a huge fan of teal, just seeing something with that kind of effort from the factory makes me smile.

Was this an option or a demo/dealer thing? Why were some colored and does anyone know what production runs/years ARE colored?

MD if this is yours can you give me the VIN# or break it down yourself and tell us just where and when this car was made and where on the line(last numbers) it happened to pickup these features. I'm very intrigued.

It wasn't a 3rd gen but in highschool I had a '92 cavi in the stock green color. It was an LN2, 5-speed, 2 door and had special decals from the factory saying "GTi" with a silver stripe down the door and a spoiler. I have NEVER seen another one like it and I can't even find a picture of one online. Mechanically everything was the same.

well... just because the a/c thing was brought up...

my car is a basic as they come...

ln2 5spd 2dr no a/c, no tilt steering, crank windows, no tach, no tripometer, am/fm.... absolutely nothing for options, just the essentials

Lots of J-bodies came with AC but it only worked til the warranty expired

Also 4 is not the US vin For the USA your Vin would start with a 1

Canada would be a 2

Mexico would be a 3
