Alright so my car is finally moving and running after a long time of being sidelined, and i am having a few issues with it, first off it is running pretty rough, there is a knocking sound coming from the engine, now my dad seems to think it is one of the guides in the timing that is knocking around but i did have it in a shop this week where they had replaced the water pump, i had a whole timing set for them to put in but they said it didnt need it so they did not put it in. noise seems to be worse than before i took it in but they think that its in the engine itself there kinda leaning towards a lifter, question is how to tell which it actually is, noise goes away whenever revving the engine if that helps with anything.
second question and i know it doesnt belong here but rather than making multiple posts ill just add it in, my dome light will not work, also there is no power going to radio anymore, was a few weeks ago but now none, and when radio was working there was no noise coming from speakers, all fuses are good just wondering if there may be some issues with wiring in the engine harness(not sure if has anything to do with it)
hopefully none of these issues are anything big but any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
The noise could be a couple things, lifters, timing chain from bad tensioner, timing. I did a motor on a GA and the guy helping me didn't get the timing right(pulled the pins on the cams to get everything lined up right) and it made a slight tapping noise at idle and would go away when reved up a little.
The dome light and radio is probably a fuse, look in the panel on the dash beside the door and check the radio fuse.
"Oil Leak ? What oil Leak ? Oh, Thats Just The Sweat From All The HorsePower!!"
Is there anyway to isolate? Also if it's something in the timing what negative effects can it have on the engine? Can it blow anything or will most damage be contained to timing housing?
I checked all fuses in panel also with a fuse light and all seem to work but may replace just to know 100%
Do you have a mechanics stethoscope handy? Use it to probe around the solid spots of the engine. Wherever it's loudest and most noticeable, that's the general area. It really just gives you a place to start. If not, grab your longest screwdriver and use it the same way with your ear against the handle.
The fact that they didn't put the timing component kit in concerns me too. Most techs would replace it anyway, as it was already opened up and is a wear component.
The dome light and radio could very well be on the same circuit. Get yourself a Haynes manual (which is available digitally on this forums somewhere, just search) and check out the wiring diagram. Teach yourself some diagnostics =)
Ok so I used a decent sized screwdriver and it is most noticeable around the timing chain so if it is a guide knocking around will that cause engine issues? Or will it mostly just be an annoying noise? Also when in idling if I slightly turn the steering wheel either way noise is barely even noticeable is that strange?
Also having issues on startup need to floor it to get it to start I read on here could be issue with FPR. Would that be a good place to start any other suggestions?
And last but not least dome light and stereo are working but I am getting no sound out of the speakers but I believe I will make a thread in audio directly for that. I have been lookin and seen it may be caused by a ground so I'm gonna try and follow that up.
Any info on what effects this could have or on anything else post up. Thanks.
If the noise is coming from the area you just had work done in, take it back. They're responsible for not doing the job properly. Just, be polite =P
When you turn your steering wheel slightly your loading the engine, same as when you rev it. The chain behaves differently at all RPMS. So I'm sure that's the difference.
Does the pedal need to be 100% to the floor for it to start? Or just partial throttle?
I believe it has to be all the way down when I start. If its started and say I run into the store and come back out usually don't ave to give any gas.
If a guide, or tensioner is bad, or not right, you could jump timing. Maybe already have and this could be why the car does not start right.
Start with one issue first. Get the noise resolved.
