help with choice of exhaust on my sunfire
Sunday, October 26, 2008 6:41 PM
okay guys here is the rundown on my exhaust... its all stock except for a magnaflow high flow cat and a normal oval type muffler.. it sounds pretty raspy but not what i want . i am looking for a deeper sound but a little bit quiet(baby on the way) ....i been thinking of adding a resonator BUT not sure on which one to add??? remember not trying to quiet it down, just wants that deep sound and lose some raspyness. do anyone recommend on what i should do? i have also a obx hearer but not sure if i should install it on stock exhaust.

also i can get a deal on a catback exhaust (new) from a buddy of mine but what i am unsure is that his catback is 3inch piping?? i measured it today and thats what the size is. also the catback is for a cavalier 2.4 .. so will it fit my car?

all and all i have to remember i got a little baby boy on the way sooo i am kinda leaning away from a loud catback unless i can quiet it down pretty good.

anyone got any options for me??

really appreciate it

thanks

chris

header = more noise
3" piping is ridiculous unless you have one huge ass turbo...even then....
your best bet is a 22" long 4" round Magnaflow Resonator....I am biased but it makes things sounds great! No raspyness in my setup...check out my car's profile for more details on the setup.

yeah i figured that that 3 inch catback would be junk ... so i cant use my header on stock exhaust correct? i been thinking about a cherry bomb resanator after my high flow cat ??? would that work ??

i want a more deeper agressave sound then what ive got .. right now it not toooo lond but pretty raspy

With basically a stock OHV, the largest you want to do is 2.25". The most common quiet set-up has been a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler and a glsspack with 2.25" pipes bent at a local shop. I have the Dynomax ST currently with a 35" long Dynomax Magnum Glasspack. To install this glasspack, you have to move the catalytic converter (2.25" universal high flow w/ O2 sensor bung) forward about 8". The cat is clamped to the downpipe of the header, the mounting flange cut off.

Basically it goes: header, down pipe, cat, glasspack, over axle pipe, SuperTurbo muffler and short pipe w/ tip or turndown.

This should give you a deep sounding exhaust with no rasp and very little resistance to the exhaust flow. Another benifit is it is a relativley inexpensive set-up, so you can spend that money where it really counts, on that baby!

and i can get no name glasspacks on ebay for about 50 bucks

also you can get a cherry bomb at canadian tire not sure how much

but whats the word are they all good?

cherry bomb is a 2 inch in/outlet

glasspacks can be put in place for resonators if you want...I would say that a true resonator does a better job but I am sure MadJack will know more than I about this subject. The problem with glass packs is that the fibre glass insulation in them can burn up and become useless over time...hence why a resonator can last longer as it doesnt share the same packing material.(if any packing material at all)

As to the OP, you could use your header on your stock exhaust but it wouldnt be worth it unless you changed all your piping up to 2.25" like MadJack said. As for the rapsiness, a resonator or a glasspack will help you out a lot.

Stock manifold,Stock cat,2.25 mandrel bent catback exhaust pipe,Hush Power II resonator,Edelbrock SDT muffler,Dual Magnaflow exhaust tip.Thats the setup I have on 01 Fire,2200.I had to take the auto center console out to drill a hole down and bolt up a exhaust hanger to help hold the exhaust because the resonator is heavy. Its sounds loud if you hit the gas hard.I wouldnt use a junk bomb.Better off putting big dents in your exhaust pipe.

scott i been thinking my exhaust is quiet enough now as it is .. if i go and add a resanator as that i want too .. sure i wont even hear my exhaust anymore .... haha so can i take out that high flow cat and add the resanator in place of that? probally go and order a magnflow resanator like you said earler.

taking out the cat will only makes things worse....they act as resonators too and clean up all that raspiness...plus who wants to kill the environment more than we already have? You may be American, but still some States have laws against removing cats. To be honest. I would change your setup. Leave your highflow cat in, then upgrade to some 2.25" piping to give it a better, deeper sound, toss in atleast an 18" Magnaflow resonator (22" or larger is better), then toss your Magnaflow oval muffler on the end of that. It will give you something that sounds like this:

Thats the setup I have now, only it is on Dave Dunsmoor's cavy, the guy I bought it off of.

resonaters are generally hollow while glasspacks are exactly that packed with fiber glass but if you get them really hot then dump water in them the fiberglass material will deteriorate and make a little more like a resonator u can do this with ceramic mufflers to get them hot put a little water in it then it will usually sound real throaty like a v8 although sometimes this doesnt work in ceramic packing though the water just dries then the exaust gets quiter...dont do this on a stock muffler only on high flow packed style mufflers......50 bucks for a glass pack wow thats HIGH pick up a Bullet muffler for 20 bucks at a shop or a mellowtone at Advance auto parts the sell thrush about 30 bucks varing in lenth of course.

When shopping for glasspacks, look down the center, are the little "fins" sticking up? Looks like a cheese grater? Those are louvers, they disrupt the exhaust gas flow and velocity. You want a straight through, perforated (small holes) core. Thrush/DynoMax Magnum Glasspacks and Cherry Bombs have perforated cores.

I have one of those resonators with louvers, and I went with the 2.5 inch on my 2.25 inch exhaust to compensate.
It has a mandrel bent custom made exhaust mated with a turbo muffler.

The sound of my wife's 03 Sunfire sounds a lot better than 90% of the exhausts I have heard.
No rasp, very deep tone, and has made a huge positive difference in up and go.

2003 Sunfire with 2 1/4 inch turbo muffler, 2 1/4 piping, 2 1/2 inch resonator, a 2 1/4 inch catalytic converter, 2 1/2 inch down-pipe, a 4:2:1 RK Sports 'clone' header, E-bay strut brace, ground wire kit and an AEM true cold air intake NOPI edition.
