Hey i have a 2002 sunfire coupe, it has a 2200 sfi motor in it, i dont know much about these cars, i just bought it and want to make it a project car. i was just wondering what the easiest motor to swap into it would be to gain morepower? i dont have a big budget so thats why i put easiest, just looking for something easy, so please ley me know!
The easiest and probably the most popular is gonna be the Ecotec, you can also swap in an LD9 but I'd find an Eco and build that. There's PLENTY of info, just search
3400.
Had to get it in before all the eco/ld9 zealots got in here. Something just looks right about a 3400 in a 3rd gen.

The only reason i said easy was cause i said i dont have a huge budget. but i heard 3400 out of a grand prix or something would work. but theres quite a bit of mods to make it fit? but i was also thinking a ecotec motor, but i took a look at the specs, and a 2.4 non ecotec i think were in the older ones had more horse than the ecotecs? but thanks for the opinions, and any more info would be great!
With a 3400 you can use your 2.2ohv transmission. The 3400 would bolt in with the right mounts. Just need a custom dog bone mount. The rest is wiring.

The base horsepower differences between the older non-eco 2.4 (LD9) and the 2.2 eco motors are only like 2-5 hp more for the LD9. Basically the same.

In the Js...10HP. And the Torque in the LD9 was 155ft-lbs 2400-4400. On the L61 it was 150ft-lbs@4000.

If i do go with a ecotec which sounds like the best way for me, how much work would it be to swap? buddy said one day, so does that mean it will bolt right up to the motor mounts? or will i have to find or make some custom mounts? or anyone else have an opinion on what to do? keep the info coming, i have some time before i change it so i wanna know all i can to make the best choice.
Best place to start is by searching Eco swap. Its been done numerous times, there are several write ups that people made.
If you cant search, I doubt you can do the swap.

no doubt that question is asked alot. im just asking to find out what other people have done, and to find what they found was the best to do.. not to be an ass, but everyone other than you just answered my question with a good answer. and i can search, but im just interested in what others have to say, i dont care how mow many people ask the question.
i'd put an Quad4 LD9 in ... but im biased... haha...
you can put either motor... in either case, you'll need: Motor, PCM, Wiring, F23 Getrag Transmission (applicable to which ever motor), and all the accessories for the motor (power steering, ac, alternator, fuel rail, etc). Since you have an 02, none of your interior components should need to be replaced, everything should plug up. If you get a used motor, i would, while the motor is out, replace the head gasket, as well as all the other gaskets, the valve seals, the bearings, and replace the piston rings, as well as get a brand new clutch and flywheel (or at least resurface the flywheel).
Generally (though some have gone the other direction here), the Eco is happier with boost (turbo or supercharged), and the LD9 is happier all motor. So decide how far you want to build the motor and what direction you want to go. Either option has plenty of potential and available aftermarket parts. The eco does have an aluminum block, however the LD9 only weighs about 50 lbs more, so power to weight is not an issue. The Ld9 does come with 10 extra HP out of the box, and a higher torque curve, and stock vs stock, the LD9 is a quicker engine.
So you need to ask yourself where do you want to go, and decide which is better to get there.

3400 would cost less because it bolts up to the isuzu trans. Chances are you'd need a new trans/clutch not that long after, though. Maybe not, if you stay stock w the 3400. I went with the F23 swap when I did my 3500, because from what I understand it's a bit tougher.

I know this is now mostly common knowledge on the forum, but yeah I double checked and I'm not sure why but I thought the 2.2 eco's put out 148 hp for some reason. Only 140 though and 150 for LD9. I would go with either the LD9 or eco way before a Chrysler 2.7 though lol.

That motor is garbage. Water pump runs off the timing chain, and when it goes bad, it starts leaking coolant and sending metal shavings inside the motor.
