01 Z24 L61 Ecotec Swap
Sunday, October 16, 2011 7:45 PM
I've been doing a little research the past few days and I'm going to do an L61 ecotec swap in my 01 Z24 as I have a rod bearing fixing to go. I found the L61 swap How To on ecotecforum.com and i've done some searches throughout different forums. Tomorrow I'm going out to pick up an 05 L61 with 77,000 with accessories and wiring harness for $150 which i think is a steal. I've made a parts list and I just want to make sure i've got all my ducks in a row when I get ready to do the swap

My car is an 01 Z24 2.4/Auto a/c,abs, etc. and the engine i'm getting is from an 05 cavalier 2.2/Auto a/c, abs, etc.

Here are the things that I need to get that do not come with the engine:

Automatic Transmission from an ecotec cavalier
Ecotec throttle cable
Ecotec cruise cable
Both return and feed fuel hoses from the ecotec
Ecotec radiator
Ecotec radiator hoses
Ecotec exhaust manifold and cat assembly

I'm still unclear on a few things, do I absolutely need the motor and transmission mounts? And i've seen on a search that a few people have had to change their lock cylinder out from the donor car and into theirs to make it work?

Please let me know if the there's anything else I would need, Thanks!

why not fix the 2.4 motor?

anyway, you probably want to tear down the eco and replace the bearings, piston rings, and head gasket. I wouldn't drop a motor with 77k on it without giving it a fresh start.

I also think you will need the eco PCM as well.

Honestly man I just don't have the time to rebuild the 2.4, i've gotten a second job and it's going to be hard enough trying to find the time to do the swap. Eventually I'd like to buy the external crank trigger wheel and swap to an LE5 bottom end. Good catch on the PCM, forgot about that! Nice car BTW

Depending on if you have HPTuners or someone you know has it, you could run the eco off the 2.4 ECU and harness. This would require some plugs to be swapped over. If you have a goal of turbo at some point might want to consider doing this. You could run the LD9 GM Reflash to tune for boost.

You can use the ld9 throttle cable on the eco, at least I hear of people doing it all the time.

I have heard of that when I was doing some searching but couldn't find any info on what pigtails needed to be change, I imagine it would be injectors, MAF, and possibly coil pigtail but i'm unsure.

And since I need the eco radiator i'm just going to buy a new one at Advance Auto parts since I get a pretty good team member discount, Looks like both automatic transmissions use the same oil cooler lines that go to the transmission so I think i'm good there.

The transmissions are the same... except for the bell housings, so the oil lines should be the same. All the motor mounts are the same, except the upper motor mount next to your coolant tank. The engine harness and pcm are nice to have for an easy swap. You also would want the ICM, coil pack assembly, and the alternator. Everything you also listed is nice to have as well.

Injectors pigtails are the same. We do not have a MAF, but a MAP, and those are the same. It is TPS, IAC, and the coil/ICM pigtail that is different.

Doesnt make sense.. I seee 200k +mile ecos in work all the time, still running strong

I have a 220K mile 2.4, still running strong. Your point other than to bash the 2.4??

That being said, I have a head from an Eco that lost compression and quit running at 104K. Any engine can fail at any mileage.

so my point is, since the motor is out, rebuild it

rebuild or simply put another LD9, no reason to go through the trouble of the swap for an eco, now if was the 2.2/2200 Id say well worth it lol. And wow much have been away for a while nice seeing you again Kyle lol
