PCM PROBLEMS
Thursday, November 03, 2011 10:24 AM
I had problems with my 2002 Cavalier. It would not shift out of first so I got it home and put the OBD2 on it.I got a shifting sylinoid a&b and also a P1680.I belive that is the PCM.I got the numbers off the PCM.If I go to the junkyard and grab a PCM from the same car do I have to get it flashed?Just worried bout the security on the car

Why would you think it's the pcm when it's telling you what the problem is? Shift solenoids go bad.

Because if the PCM is acting up then it could be sending a bad error to the solenoids causing it not to shift. The solenoids are controlled by the PCM

Ok replace the PCM and let us nkow what happens.

Uhm..... If you unplug the shift solenoids, doesn't the car get stuck in 3rd gear (or maybe 2nd)? If that's the case, and you unplug the solenoids, and it's still in first, that shows your problem.

I think you're throwing parts at a problem. I'd have it looked at by a transmission shop.

P1680 stands for reprogram or replace PCM... I'd get the dealer to reflash the PCM first, before replacing... If you need to replace, you need to get an automatic PCM matching your motor (If Eco, get an 02... if LD9 get 99-02, if 2200, get 99-02), and then do the security relearn procedure (key on for like 15 minutes or something)...

Edit: The dealer will reflash the PCM based on your vin... so anything crazy (like a motor swap), will impede this...

as for the shift solenoids... unplug them and see what gear you are in... you may have two separate problems here

Ok so I unplugged the batt for like 30 mins while working on the car.Hooked it back up and cranked the car ran it for 2 days with no problems and then all of a sudden everything comes back I think it is a PCM problem.Does anyone know where I can get a wiring harness for it also.Someone chopped couple wires up on it and I am a lil OCD on stuff like that.
