head swap time. questions.
Saturday, March 24, 2012 10:52 AM
I'm basically rebuilding a motor at the salvage yard so far I've found the motor and the intake secret cam. I want to look for the 086 head but honestly don't know how to find it. What am I looking for while I'm at the salvage yard? Specific Vin? Or where could i find the casting number while the motor still in the car?

i believe its the 4th letter of the vin.. should be "A". but look for beretta gtz's, achieva's, grand am's, calasis'... all had the HO or "LG0" engines with the 086 head on them. be careful though as this head is notorious for cracking... if you do actually find one dont get ur hopes up til its been magnaflux checked for cracks. once its been cleared for take off then jump for joy.

Yea I was planning on doin a visual before it even leaves the yard.

Does this sound stupid? I'm planning on building my motor (roughly) in the yard itself. Like putting in the secret cams and head (maybe.) Just to keep the cost down. I also plan on throwing the ho mani on the motor to just for when I possibly go boosted. Is this a smart move on my part or am i setting myself up for something bad?
And is there anyone local to Taylor, MI?

There is nothing wrong with getting all the parts together and bolting them onto one engine to keep the cost of the parts cheap. Buying an engine is less than buying the parts separately. Just please tell me your going to disassemble and put in new gaskets and such when you get it home.

yep it is... especially when it'll take you probably 20 minutes to get the cams/towers/lifters off the other engines then maybe another hour to put them on the good engine.
