Im getting a free pontiac boonavill from my girl friend, the cars transmission is pretty much dead, the engine still runs grate, but it is getting tired with 230K on it,,, so i know i need to rebuild it. but the question is i want to take the 3.8L V6 and put it in my cavalier, i cant use the pontiac's transition because its starting to go bad, so i have to use my cav's tranny. is that even possible? Other advice is much apreshated!!!
Unless you have like 5-6 grand to play around with, don't even bother...
Seriously, it's not even worth the swap.

Still not low enough for a signature.
I can do every thing my self. How will it cost 5-62 grand.
Engine rebuilt would be 1500-2000 alone.
Engine mounts, wiring, misc fabricated parts. Easy 1000ish
What trans are you going to use, and what clutch.
It could easily add up to 5000 in parts and machining alone. That with you doing most of it yourself.

I work in a machine shop so I can pretty much do all the metal Fab my self. Foe the engine rebuild I would use all OME parts. Tranny the the cav is automatic. If I can use that tranny I would.
Sounds like you already know what it would take and you are just debating about the money aspect, if you can do it go ahead, people here are telling you based on what they have seen people spend doing it, some are machinists etc....
Just build up and turbo your cavalier motor. It'll be just as fast or faster vs. the V6 swap and prob easier.

so to answer your question... I'm pretty sure you cannot use your transmission...
the LN2 trans bolts up to the 60 degree V6's (3100, 3400 etc) but i don't think it bolts to the 3800 series v6..
though you might get better Transmission related answers in the Transmission forum

The LN2 trans will bolt up to the 3800, but a 3/4T40E won't hold up to the 3800's power very well.
well I think you need to get ahold of 'Raven' or 'Not a 2.4'
No a turbo cavi will not out run an equally built 3800 not in a million years would it if you went at the bulds equally-example...1mm oversized valves and bigger cams in the cavi...so in turn bigger valves and cam in the 3800, in reality the 3800 wil make more power off boost than a pretty nice cavi on boost will, unless you have the team green cav or that canadian one thats for sale for 20g's and make 6**WHP....so it's totally upto you.
as far as the doing it part...you need to make a new subframe, you need to make a new custom rear engine mount as well as make provisions for the dog-bone mounts and the two factory side mounts as well--I am making reference as though looking at motor with hood open to avoid misunderstanding---you will need to make an new hybrid harness that uses the 3800 computer and engine bay stuff but cavi passenger compartment stuff-not too hard from what I have found. And Raven will most likely do some work for you as well for a fee. He is probably gonna do a sub-frame for my car-im goign to use the L36 motor(3800 series2) and top-swap the m90 onto it--now you have all the other custom work to do...lines mostly....umm transmission....well I have heard of the LN2 trans working but not firsthand, I have also heard that the 3*** engines can share transmissions...but even if you can use your factory trans, I am thinking the 3800 will force you to relocate the trans anyway so drveshafts have to be fabbed up a little...and i'm thinking you need an N-body control arm swap too to accomidate the difference in the sub-frame, but I could be wrong. I guess you can get a piece of cardboard, use it to make a template of the 3800 rear, mark all the bolt holes, cut it to the correct shape, and then make a measurement of how far the flywheel sticks past the block, as well as all the other appropriate measurements for spaceing around the trans housing. then goto the scrap yeard and strat lining the template up with the other transmissions form the other motor, or just line it upto the motors, which ever matches works...simple...but a pain.

You miss one point...
Boosted and Built Ln2 cost "x" amount of dollars
Boosted and Built 3x00 Engine cost "x" amount of dollars to swap and then "x" amount more dollars to build...
When it comes down to it, how much money do you want to spend?

This was pretty much my thinking behind saying what I did...
