1997 Cavalier needs new motor
Thursday, April 19, 2012 7:19 PM
I'm sort of new on here. I've done a bunch of work on cavalier before, but usually the ones with Quad 4's. Now i just bought a 1997 Cavalier with the 2.2L motor. I was wondering what year motors are interchangeable with the 1997? I know 1996 and 1997 work, but will any other year 2.2L work? Because i can get a 2000 Sunfire 2.2 pretty cheap.

you want 97 and 96 for a direct drop in... 98-99 will take a little bit of work to swap... 00+ will require a bit more work...

What kind of work? I know the serpentine belt, and intake manifolds are different, but can't i just strip down the 1997 motor, and put everything on the 2000 motor, like the intake manifold and what not? What kind of major work would there be?
Thanks for the advice.

98 and up the head (and gasket),pistons, front cover are different. Also the teeth on the crank reluctor are a few degrees advanced on 98 and up. 94&95 will work but they have no cam sensor hole in the block so it will run but it will always have a cam code.
