Power steering remove or not
Sunday, April 29, 2012 8:11 PM
Ok when i crank my car the belt squeals just for a few seconds then stops it is a brand new belt so i figured it just needed to wear in. But every once and a while when im driving the belt will squeal and i think it is because my pump is going out or it might not have enough fluid in it i havent check that yet. My question is instead of depowering the rack and removing the entire pump and stuff if it would still work if i left it all hooked up like it is and just got a belt for the crank, alternator and water pump. Im a big guy so im not worried about it being hard to steer if i can drive a 57 f-100 i think i can drive a little cavie with no prob. I just dont have the time to remove all that stuff right now.

If you do bypass the pump, loop the lines at the rack. It will be a tad easier than fighting the pump. It also could be your tensioner...

I see a lot of guys try this and they end up chewing belts like crazy. One of your pulleys has a bad bearing, probably. Which is causing it to lose speed and then the belt slips over it, making the squeal. Listen to the bearings with a mechanic's stethoscope or a long screwdriver, you can hear the difference when you find the bad bearing.
