I need to check the piston to valve clearance on a '97 2.2 OHV engine. On overhead cam engines, I'm accustomed to doing this with an adjustable lifter in place of the hydraulic lifter(because the hydraulic lifter will collapse when rotating the engine by hand). Do I need to use an adjustable lifter to check this, or will the stock hydraulic lifter stay at the proper length while I do this check?
If I need to use an adjustable lifter, where can I get them?

I'm not aware of an adjustable lifter that fits. You may be better off just pulling the springs.

Yah, probably pull the valve, put that cylinder at TDC and measure from fully closed to the point it hits the piston (but pushing it manually until it stops). You definitely want to figure this out, and also make sure the valve stem clearance is good enough. Or else this will happen.
Thanks folks. It turned out to be the piston hitting the spark plug. NGK 7317 did the trick.
