I'm from Wisconsin but I'm going to be attending UTI out in Glendale Heights June of '09 and getting a place out there. I'm somewhat involved in the Milwaukee "scene" and I'm involved with the WI GM-Tuners as well as some local teams, whats the scene down in Illinois? Any small teams looking for members, any good car clubs I should look into? Any good local spots to check out for cruising on the weekends? Should I keep to the suburbs or am I going to have to make the 45min trip out to chicago to get any taste of the local car enthusiast scene?
Also - are radars illegal in IL? I know they are safe in WI but whats the deal down there?
Any advice would be welcomed, I'm kinda nervous about moving out there by myself because I've adjusted pretty well to Wisconsin, not looking forward to starting over from zero.

IL died like 3 years ago lol
............and no, radar detectors are not illegal. Depends on what part of Illinois it is. I am near STL, and we are still up and running.

IL sucks lol

Radar detectors ARNT illegal. I live in schaumburg about 10 minutes from your school.

Are you serious? No offense but you have to be half retarded to do that. Automotive is one of the worst fields you could possibly get into. The business is going down the drain, dealerships are going out of business left and right, hell our dealership gets a tech or 2 a week coming in trying to get a job and we've been laying people off. There are no jobs out there and its been steadily going down hill for the past 5+ years. With lots of people looking for a job noone is going to hire you over the hundreds of experienced techs trying to find work. Despite what the UTI recruiter tells you noone is impressed by a UTI graduate, nobody cares that you went there. If you really want to piss your future down the drain at least save liek $20,000 and go through a community college or something for there automotive program. Put if your hell bent on this stupid decision at least look into going to the UTI in Pheoniz, I don't remember the specifics but going through UTI in AZ leaves you a few credits short of having an actual degree (associates degree) on top of the pointless diploma you get from all the campuses.
BTW that might seem a bit harsh but to be honest I WISH someone would have explained that same stuff to me back in 01
......sometimes the truth hurts.

Honest Right There^^^
I went to UTI. I work in the field... And it is going down the @!#$ter fast!!!! There have been lots of businesses closing around my area.. Including one of my favorite dealerships that i have done much business with persionaly and with my job. Lattof Chevrolet.. I miss that dealership. Also there have been plenty of independent shops struggling including the one i work at. We have been in the red for the past 3 months not good!!!!!!
Take it for what its worth. But if i could go back to 06 and know what i know now i would have not gone to UTI and would have gone to a community college and just grabbed my gen ed classes then transfer when i was done to a university.
Best of luck with school!!

Lattof is gone, Champion Dodge is gone, Ed Murphy VW and Buick are gone, Schaumburg Hummer and Chevy have become one, Joe Mitchell Buick is gone, Extreme Ford is gone, Roto is closing at least Lincoln and mercury (no sure if they are keeping Suby) in a couple weeks, the Mercedes on rand road is gone. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.
News is saying numbers are expecting 700+ dealerships go under and close by the end of 2008.... that's completely out of business and gone, thats not taking into account all the lay offs.
We've gotten rid of 7 people so far...
Good thing I'm going for Toyota and BMW! I only drive a Chevy because that's what I got stuck with.
And it's funny because I worked at a shop just helping out and cleaning for a while, their business was booming like crazy. They said that they where making waaay above what they figured on and they paid me like 8/hour just to bum around, clean the shop, check tire pressure, and do occasional oil changes. Every actual technician I've talked to has said that it's a great business to get into. Granted dealerships are going out because people aren't buying new cars (and if they are, they're buying Japanese) but they're buying used cars and getting them fixed which is why everyone I know who runs a shop is making mad money right now. Plus people I've talked to who've graduated UTI said they have had no trouble finding work, they actually had trouble choosing what they wanted to do. One guy ended up starting his own shop with another guy which is the place I worked at. Of course they deal in imports, mostly German cars. I wont deny that dealerships are going down the tubes and American cars are pretty much gone, but there is still some hope in the auto industry, especially with BMW's steps towards popularizing diesel engines.

forgot to add - I'm taking the Auto/Diesel/Industrial program so if I go to a local tech college (I forgot which ones worked with UTI) I can finish up another few credits and just get a bachelors if I wanted too.
Anyway - back to the original question: so there is pretty much nothing to look forward to in Illinois?

What ever floats your boat...
You can't say noone warned you
Im gonna agree with the people above me. Even the beginning of 07 it was a good industry, but with the gas price spike and the economy going down the toilet, its becoming a bad industry. Mostly with domestics. I went to WyoTech and im beginning to really regret that decision. But it was a last minute choice and god, i will never do it again. They tell you everything you want to hear, and deliver on about 1/10th of it. If your gunhoe about it, go for it. If i had the choice, i wouldn't waste the money again.

by this it seems to me that you have lived under a rock for the past year or so. I go to a four year school that when i get out i will have a college diploma and a degree in bachelor of applied sciences, i'm still going to have trouble finding a really good job. My major is automotive technology with an emphasis in service management and collision repair and insurance and on top of that i have a minor in business administration, i will will have a diploma from a highly recognized school in the united states for automotive and im gonna have trouble getting a job. do you see where i am going with this? at least when i finish i will have a college degree to fall back upon but my odds are not looking so great to get a job in the industry. Really listen to what we are trying to tell you because you will regret it man. Ask the guys that have gone through the program that are on here, there are a ton of posts about that in the off-topic forum. If your still set on automotive look at something like the school i go to, where you can get an actual degree that might help you in the future. Also with all the expenses i have, in the end if i were to pay for my entire college career with loans i will still spend ten thousand less then what you pay for UTI. This is food for thought, really reevaluate your decision!

Just an FYI BMW isnt a gurantee....... You have to make it to them. Good luck with that.. They accepted only 20 students out of the whole school when i was there. Oh and the Ford FACT training is amazing!
Oh BTW you know my race team and me persionally from up at GLD import wars
Honestly, I suck at normal Gen Ed type stuff. I'm failing math even though I'm trying, I'm pretty much just floating on turned in H/W, none of it is really right. I suck at engineering, I'm currently failing because I don't have enough time to work on all the projects we've been given, I'm pretty much a slow retard and cars is the only thing that gives me joy and meaning to my life that I can actually do. I can't design them, I doubt I'll be able to do computer tuning without excessive training, but I can fix em.

so your sole motivation to go to UTI is because you're too lazy to complete a real education?
do you think education comes easily to everyone? you sound like 99% of the US' youth these days. pretty sad really.
You're just in the wrong part of IL.
