Ouch, almost 11k for a modded cavalier. Goodluck with that one.

KBB says 8,500 for excellent condition

Quote:

Selling A Car:
Selling a car isn't easy either. First figure out what your car is worth, bottom line. Nobody cares what you owe on it, or how many payments are left. They want true down to earth numbers of what the vehicle is worth. Just as with buying a car, take a look at each of the previously stated areas and figure out a price. Start with the Kelly Blue Book private party price for your particular vehicle, and go from there.

We all know you spent thousands of dollars upgrading your car, but I hate to tell you this, when you sell your car, its almost worthless. The reason that it is worthless is that the person who is buying it will almost certainly have to go to a bank to get a loan. When a bank figures out how much money they will give a person, they look in a small (in Wisconsin its yellow) book to determine a vehicles value based on make, model, body style, engine, and mileage. It doesn't say anything in there about that awesome stereo, $1000 body kit, $5000 paint job, $1200 rims, or $600 tires. Its worthless. The best advice to those who have upgraded your cars is to part it out, whatever you can, before selling it. Return it back to as close to stock as you can before selling it. That is the only way you will come even close to recovering any of the money that you have spent modifying your car.

Then, you have to sell it. Naturally the people who are wanting to buy it will want to talk you down, so let them. Slightly overprice your car by up to $1000, and let the people talk you down. Don't go any lower than what you determined the car to be worth. Usually selling your car to a private party will give you much more money than trading it in. Many dealers don't sell the cars that they take in on trades, they bring them to auctions and have them sold. Auctions don't always give a great price, so the dealer won't give you one on a trade for it either.

Overall, get advice from those who have done things like this in the past. Your parents are a great resource, as well as Kelly Blue Book. Check with local and state laws during the process. Make sure your car is legal to sell before selling it, and that the car that you are buying is legal to buy when buying one.

to give you an idea of how out-of-whack those sites are...nada puts it at 10750...kbb puts it at 8500...now i have my modified and babied car on here for 10,500...am i willing to negotiate...absolutely...but as that nice little blurb you posted stated, loan amounts from the bank are based off of retail numbers...and even the retail on KBB is over 10...i've been in the car business for 2 years, and i've sold more cars than 99.9% of people ever own...so thank you for your input, but on this one, you can just assume keep it to yourself

Yeah, but Kelley, NADA and the other rating organizations SET the baseline prices used by those that DO buy and sell cars.

What you should really be doing is taking the NADA value of the car and REDUCING it for all the mods you have. Modified cars DO NOT sell for their book value unless they are documented show or race winners. In other words, if someone can buy your car and hit the show or race circuit and start winning you might get your money out of it. Your car obviously doesn't fit that criteria.

You'll be a lot better off stripping out the modified parts and returning the car to stock, selling the car at book value and selling the parts individually. THEN you might at least break even.

You'll also be a lot better off if you can your attitude. You're not the first or only one to ever try to sell a car and these people know what they're talking about.

You're not going to get a lot of calls on the car, that much I can assure you. Don't take it personally. People just don't call on ads that are outrageously overpriced. When they DO call though, good luck, and don't be surprised when they try to talk you down.....A LOT.

alright...Lurch: 8 g is trade in...a dealership isn't going to pay you what you can make selling it (i work at a dealership)
JimmyZ: They do not know what i do about the car market, and my "attitude" comes into play when people sit and bash things they know nothing about...people who buy and sell cars for a living do NOT use NADA or KBB...they use MMR, which is not available to all public...Most people who think a price is too high say nothing, because they are not interested in it...that's fine...if you're not interested don't sit and publically bash my price...that would be like if i stood out in front of a business and bashed their product...i would have the police called on me...i did not come on here to ask if my price was what you wanted to pay, I came on to say a farewell to the org, which, up until now has been a haven for me...i'll worry about selling my car...i just figured that jbody enthusiasts might want to know it's on the market...
As i said before...my price is negotiable, but fair...anybody with something CONSTRUCTIVE to say feel free to...
I also need to add there is a transferable warranty that can be waived to lower price.

Well if that's the case then I need to know where exactly you think you're going to sell a 2003 Cavalier for $10,500...because if that's possible in this plane of reality I'm going into business buying Cavs here and reselling them there.

Sorry dude, I still think you're delusional. $8K is RETAIL for that car. Dealer trade-in is about $6500, in IMMACULATE condition, with low mileage, every convceivable factory option and no aftermarket parts.

Let us know how this works out for you. If you sell it at your asking price, let us know if they're a member here so they can be publicly ridiculed for being that dumb.

"I know alot about the car business"....reminds me of the idiots in the performance forum that "know a lot about engines" and miraculously find a way to run low 13's with BS boltons because they "know what they're doing".
Cory Elbert wrote:that would be like if i stood out in front of a business and bashed their product...i would have the police called on me
Well this isn't a business and there are no cops to call. You're trying to rip someone off by trying to convince them your car is worth about $2-3K more than it really is. You don't REALLY expect people to sit quietly by, do you?

okay...the dealership I WORK AT will give me 8500...it IS low milage WITH every factory option available +...so i'm asking 2-3000 more than it's worth? prove it without the use of such arbitrary sites as nada and kbb...we already know they are grossly deviated from one another...and i don't "know a lot about the car business"...I MAKE MY MONEY IN THE CAR BUSINESS!...And people on the org ridicule people for every purchase they make...it's full of haters with a few good individules that are helpful...none of the people i know in the org have posted in this thread...and that's because you gentlemen fall into the other category...but at least you're not in minority : )

are you asking more then its worth? yes
can you still sell it for that price? yes, just don't expect it to sell instantly

it may not be worth as much as your asking but hell there's dealers around here trying to get $14k for 2003's yet.

i sold my 96 neon (sohc) two years ago for $3000. kbb had it listed at $1200. it was bone stock (just minor appearance enhancements) with the tranny starting to go. it did take me 4 months to sell it though.
