Winter FL Meet 2006
Thursday, May 18, 2006 8:27 AM
Thats right i said winter meet.....after hearing discussion in some other threads about how awesome the Fl J-show was ( which it was and if you missed well tuff lol ). i talked to my car club and i have decided to throw a winter meet towards the middle of October or November depending on what kinda of reaction i get out of this. Now i know some of the tampa guys tired to get one going and only the tampa guys went ( i myself would of gone but i had other things that i had to do first sry : / ). A couple of things first i am planning on having it in orlando somewhere just well i know orlando pretty well since i live here lol but if any of you guys from other cities wanna have it there i do not mind doing the footwork as long as you give me info. Second i am planning on making this basicly a state wide meet with no awards ( not that there is anything wrong with awards but i think having one show with awards and one without is good),. I want this meet to be all about the ppl and cars more socializing and stuff. Now i understand that given those months being a little ways off i am sure most of you do not know if you can come or not.

So this is open to discussion....let me know what you all think

as for price since i do not know where we are going yet bc i am trying to find a nice size area where we can all be together and not pay a arm and a leg....but when i do i will let u all know

so lets get some feedback

When we did the Winter Meet, we chose an area that didn't cost anything at all: a public park. The only thing that would have cost $$ is the night before was "track night" and we went to Wing House after the park on Saturday.

I'm not sure a lot of people would make it out if there weren't trophies and such. Driving hours just to see people they aren't that great of friends with isn't appealing to most. People work with the reward system and not all really feel that strongly about the socialization. Good luck with it, though.

I agree with the cost thing.

As for the rest well no I don't. Truly if people came to the meet for trophies then half should know to stay home. We all know who has the nice cars in Florida. I did not go this year to win a throphy (and was very surprised to get one). I went to see old friends.

I agreed with a winter meet last year when Tampa tried it, but I no longer agree with it. We have a hard enough time getting people to the annual one. Why have 2 events, before you know it your are competeing against each other, Even if that is not your intent.

I think just more should be added to the annual meet. Maybe a cruise on Sunday before heading home. A planned cruise ending at a certain point. Make it a full weekend event and regardless of where it is in the state then no reason for people to say too far of a drive for 1 day. This event has never been 1 day, it was always a weekend event.

I truly think this year people got along great lots of people talking and enjoyinh looking at the cars, which is why this was started in the first place.

I agree with your points, John. As for the cruise, though.... We caravaned to the hotel from the track and it was hell. People don't know how to follow the only person that knows the way and seem to enjoy speeding up and slowing down (repeat 30 times). I don't think some people are able to handle staying with a group.

Sorry....I didn't meant o be a bitch I just haven't mentioned that yet and it's something that severly bothered me. Cutting off your own caravan in traffic is rude and dangerous.

i appreciate all the thoughts and the ideas....yes i was planning on making it free and i understand if you don't wanna come. The reason i am doing this is bc i feel that one show a year wether one day or a whole weekend is enough to get everyone together.

no worries if you don't wanna come i understand

I heard of some of what happened, and we have had this in the past. Glad I was not involved. It is this reason I also feel the track should be a bigger art of the event to get this out. The first year we had this show we had a J-Body class only at the track (no extra cost involved), and got to race each other lots of fun.

The cruise part would need lots of planning etc... I'm actually putting one together for the local J's in my area. I went to a NSX/S2000 meet a few years ago with my friend. They did this. We went in groups of 5-6 cars. The front and rear cars had radio's and lead the way. We had 3 check points. no one had to drive fast, but there was times when we were doing 120 mph (but in areas that you could and be as safe as you can on the street). This cruise was in Orlando and we had lots of turns and it was a good time. I realize I was with a totallt different group of people. I have many ideas on the cruise part that could make it work (at least I think), but maybe it would not.

Get something planned and then advertise the hell out of it. If you get people stoked about the meet, they will show up. It was pretty obvious that everyone enjoyed this years meet, but it's up to you to play off of that to make this a success.

This year's advertising was something that I believe this years event had that no other one could touch. I can't remember a day in the past 5 months where there was a topic on the front page of the South East forum that did not pertain to this meet. This is something to remember for next year as well.

i'm down for what ever, and i'll help out any way i can...but thomas is right, it's all about communicating and advertising!!!

i would not mind putting together the flyer for this event once something gets in the works. just keep me in the look of what you guys are thinking and take it from there.

i do agree with higgins though, it diffucult to get two annual events to work, and i think having it be just a meet rather that a show would be cool - i know getting a trophy was nice, but it wasn't the reason for me working so hard with steve to make the show a sucess - it was nice to get out there and meet the people i had been talking to and that had never seen my car and vise versa...

a meet & bbq would be cool - but again diffucult to get people to commit to and pay for/bring food...i know the park we went to for our little winter shin-dig was really cool, might be an idea - although having it somewhere besides orlando/tampa area would be cool to - parks are usually free, just gotta find a nice one.

also with the timimg of the event - november you have alot of events plus thanksgiving...october? even september? i know alot of people have vacations arounf labor day - but maybe that would be an advantage...

but if we all come together on this it might work out - as long as people give it a chance. usually everyones afraid it's going to be to small a turn out to travel to it, but if 75% of the peolple think that way and do not give it a chance then noone shows up and the event goes to hell...

"1st annual fl j-bbq" has a nice ring to it...

if you guys do a well planned meet like the april ones, then yes people will come.

the week before, "hey, the bbq is this weekend", give me a break.

as a point to look towards the future, not as a point of criticism, one of the reasons the first winter meet failed was because of poor planning, even people within tampa said the same.

if you build it, they will come......

I agree. Maybe like 1st weekend of October? The weather will still be nice. Having it at a park also sounds great. Maybe one out by the coast in one direction or the other. That way we can all wander around and hang and play volleyball or frisbee's or football or whatever anyone wants to bring. At least that way there will be something for everyone, even families with kids, that way no1 is excluded or left out. If we get a free park we can have like a $5-10 fee or sumthin for food & drinks to already be there instead of expecting someone to bring it and never show or be super late.
And i like the idea of a making a whole weekend of it, track Friday and BBQ Saturday. Maybe if we ask nicely we could convince Donny to make T-shirts again
I'm all for whatever we do. I had a blast and loved the Annual show. This could become an annual also if everyone participates. But this is just one other opinion.

i'd have no problem designing another t-shirt...

the only problem is that fall is arriving quick, it's almost june!!! so we need to figure out what we are doing and put something together.
