Going to be in Tampa for a day or two in March and looking for ideas of places to go, things to do, and places to eat and drink. Going to be there just a night or two and just curious of what museums, parks, cruises, etc to visit and/or avoid.
You could go to Busch Gardens.
Car is for Sale!Supercharger kit is for sale!
We have heard some say that Busch Gardens is really no different than any other theme park. Opinions? I'm from KC so I have been to Worlds of Fun and Six Flags in St. Louis many many times. Is Busch Gardens really any different?
I guess it depends on what you like to do. Are you coming with family? friends? significant other? How much spending money are you budgeting for your trip? Are you wanting to go out at night to bars/clubs?
Significant other will be with me, and some friends will be joining on one night. Also have to remember that I am probably a bit older than a lot of people on here so clubbing isn't really my thing anymore....maybe 8-10 years ago.
Budget? That hasn't been the concern for this trip for the most part. Not looking to drop a crap load of money, but it is vacation and money is always going to be spent.
As for Bars and Clubs....We are more into live music and chilling out than anything. Alternative Rock and Jazz are what come to mind for the most part. We weren't sure about Ybor City since the websites make it sound like a bunch of uppity yuppity shopping with nothing but corporate stores and such that we have here. We will have one night that will be in a hotel on the St. Petes side and another night on the Tampa side by the airport.
Food wise, we like finding the hole in the wall local joints that you don't find in other places. Examples like if you were to come to KC I would send you off to the old BBQ joints off yonder in downtown, or maybe to the burger joint that is literally just an old trailer that was parked and built around but has the best darn burgers around (we nicknamed the burgers gut-bombs).
As for BG...well the woman wants to go, but we aren't sure it is worth $65 per person. I agree each theme park has it's own feel, but the few I have been to all have rides that are almost the same at each park. Is BG a zoo + rides? Never have quite figured that one out.
With our limited amount of time in Tampa, just curious if there are better things to see and do instead. Anyone know anything about the various museums?
- Holocaust Museum
- MOSI
- Tampa Bay History Center
- Tampa Museum of Art
You might like
Channelside. Most of the bars are 21+. on weekends, I believe all are. There are a lot of food options, from a nice steak dinner to hooters. It's also right down the street from the Ice Palace, so you could always catch a Lightning game, then hit up C-side.
BG is a theme park and a zoo wrapped into one. You also get free beer at the hospitality house. Not a bad deal, but I'd shop around for tickets before shelling out $65 each.
MOSI is cool, but if you've been to one before, you may want to check out something else.
I'm not sure where you'll be staying in St. Pete, but you have a few options for entertainment. If you are into Baseball, there are a number of Major league clubs who just arrived for Spring Training. Tickets are generally really cheap for these games too.
If you're into art, the
Salvador Dali Museum in St. Pete might be worth checking out. I know they were undergoing renovations some time ago, so you may want to check out if they are open.
If you're near the
St. Pete Pier, that might be something to check out at night.
Baywalk is across the street from the entrance to the Pier, offering some casual dining options along with a few places to grab a drink.
Mahaffey Theater is nearby as well.
We will be at the Hampton Inn St. Petersburg which states it is somewhere near the pier, and the Hampton Inn by the Airport in Tampa. We are planning on hitting up a Cards game in Jupiter earlier in the week before we make it to Tampa...a bit of a drive, but my girl is from STL so I can't really argue that one.
Thanks for all of the info so far.
Anyone have any thoughts regarding the drive between Tampa and Fort Myers? Interstate all the way? Or is there a more enjoyable route? As in are the non-Interstate routes worthwhile? Or are they just a bit PITA and slow you down a bunch?
If your into science MOSI is cool. Well it was when I went there like 7 years ago, not sure now.

Cape Coral and Palm/Don Pedro Island.
yeah right down the road from me lol
I must say....people down here drive like arse!!! Including the police. My buddy down here warned me to not stop for yellow lights, don't go at a green light until you see at least 2 cars come through, speed limits are a suggestion and you should do at least 10+ over or you are going to get run down, and people do not use turn signals. He wasn't kidding. I feel like I am in Texas.
I was doing 80 on 275 and got passed by a sheriff who was openly weaving in and out of traffic.

Go to any of the retirement community (Moron,.. ahh Marion County) areas and the seniors drive just the opposite. 15-20 mph below the speed limit (daylight clear, road) which is especially fun on a four lane and the get side-by-side or can't out accelerate a loaded concrete mixer. If the other lane clears (or reach a passing zone that's clear) they speed up. If and when you get to pass them, they look at you like your the idiot! Of course they like to hurry-up to get over/jump out in front of you because your going to pass them or going too fast for their tastes.
I actually feel lucky if I find someone that actually drives the speed limit!
