2.4L Questions......
Wednesday, February 11, 2009 1:06 PM
Alright, I want to see who knows their stuff.....not really, gathering info. OK, what can anybody tell me about the 2.4? Is there anything I need to specifically watch out for, or things you KNOW need to be done to keep this thing consistently on the road? I know Hondas, and I know the mechanics are no different, but I haven't really read alot of good about the 2.4. OH, and is this the LD9 I keep reading about? 2001 Z24 2.4L....Any help is mucho appreciated.

Yeah, watch your oil level. Motor is prone to spinning the number three rod bearing.

Yes you have the LD9. You'll hear some people refer to it as that.

The 96-02 Jbodies came with 2 motors.
LD9 = 2.4
LN2 = 2.2ohv/2200
Sometime during 2002 they started using the 2.2 Ecotec engines in place of the 2.4.
L61 = 2.2 Ecotec

Right on. I've got 2 grand to spend. Would I be better off sinking money into this, or swapping for a stock Eco?

That's a long debate... they are both really close as far as base hp and potential. Is engine performance your main concern at this point?

Not primarily, no. But in all honesty, I like the way the car looks as it sits. I've got the good Z24 rims, I like the factory body kit, and aside from that, don't really want to lower it. I'd like to debadge, and remove the side molding, but I can do that myself. My main goal is longevity. I need this beast to last me as long as possible lol.

As long as you keep everything in check and keep it up maintenance wise it should last a long time. If you browse around here long enough you'll probably find something you want to do with it.

can you post pics?

like Micah said, there were 2 options as far as motors go until April of '02 (I believe it was April) when Chevy dropped the Z24 model, also dropping the LD9, and started using the L61 Ecotec and calling it the LS Sport. these looked just like what your car should look like now, minus the Z24 bading on the front fenders. also, '02 featured an added lip spoiler to the rear bumper and an optional front lip spoiler as well. thru the '02 model yr, you had the option of the L61 or the aforementioned LN2 2200 SFI. when the '03s came out, the Ecotec was your only option and this continued until '05 when the j-car platform was discontinued

if you're looking for genuine reliability, then leaving the motor alone is always your best bet when it comes to any car, really.. but if you want a lil more pep, a short-ram intake and a cat-back exhaust wont hurt anything either. our cars also have some outstanding brakes from the factory - despite the fact we have rear-drums - so you shouldnt worry about them. these cars also take very well to suspension tuning.. you'd be surprised what a set of shocks/struts and stabilizers will do for your car

you also happened to get the "better version" of the LD9. from '96-'98, those seemed to have oiling issues, resulting in premature spun bearings and other bottom-end weardown.. not to mention the manuals used Isuzu transmissions, which are complete garbage. in '99, they improved on the oil journals as well as bumped up compression, making it a lil more stout and an overall better motor. in '00, all j-bodies with manual trannies switched over to Getrags, which is ALOT better than the old junk.. with slightly shorter gearing

an Ecotec swap is an option, but with the specs so close together (less than 10hp difference) and neither one of them being more reliable than the other, there's no point in it.. if it aint broke, dont fix it. then again, the '00-'02s are alot easier to swap over than the '95-'99s.. mine being a '98 and have went thru that Hell already.... hope this was helpful

Eff Hondas. Z24 will pull on a lot of civics. Even a LN2 owner has nothing to worry about when a 1.5L/1.6L sohc civic pulls up.

Pics? Any and all!

i have an '01 Z24. i've never lost to a honda that wasnt either boosted or had a swap. and if you do put exhaust on it, check your oil constantly! and if its a 5-speed, then keep 2 grand put aside for new syncros every year or so (if u r gonna be driving hard).

I was askin for pics of the car in general.. under hood, interior, full body; sounds like a personals ad LOL!!

yea, our LN2 is comparable to the Honda D15 and D16 and our Ecotec and LD9 is comparable to the B16. like what No-Limit said, I've never lost to a Civic or Integra that wasnt boosted, spraying, or had a big-time motor swap. stock-for-stock and mod-for-mod, a Z24 will take down an Si every time.. reason being is the torque. Hondas are known for not being torque-ey (you being a Honda guy should know this), whereas our LD9s and Ecos are quite the torque monsters, which is kinda like a secret weapon since most of the tuner scene wants nothing to do with us, therefore never doing the homwork

in near-stock form, my kill list includes Ford Escort ZX2s and Focus ZX3s.. even a couple SVTs, a few S13 240SXs, TRD Edition Corollas and Celicas, Mustang GTs, Camaro RSs.. I've even laid the smackdown on a couple fellow Z24s and LS Sports. you'd be surprised what our cars can do if you know how to drive them.. just look at Higgins - he has an inpressive '01 Z24 and its NA. its all about skill

my loss list includes a B20-swapped Civic EK hatch, a heavily boosted 1st gen DSM, and '04 GTO, a Silverado SS 454.. all track losses I might add. on the street, I have yet to record a loss

I'm not keeping anything a secret. I drive through Orlando all the time. Drove through going to Ft. Myers last week, and probably will be doing the same Tuesday.

if I can come up with an extra $100, can we meet up and get me a couple credits for HPT for the new car? the guy that bought the purple car hates the exhaust, to which I told him I wanted it back anyway.. but I need HPT to cancel out the rear o2 sensor since the exhaust I wanna swap on has no cat..
