Started to change my 84 Vert Sunbird exhaust manifold gasket, and low and behold the spud on the #2 cyl is boken at the weld to the collector pipe..its not fully broken off, so, I believe the orientation can be preserved while welding it..Has anyone done that or had it done? Or better yet, would anyone have an exhaust manifold for an 84 1.8L turbo engine?

One other question: I asumme that there is a gasket between the exhaust manifold and the wastegate..would anyone have a source for that gasket..als still looking for the manifold, or info on welding..Thanks

I got my flange gasket from a Fel-Pro head gasket rebuild kit but I think you can buy the flange gasket separately if you want.
If you are going to weld the manifold yourself bevel the edges to the crack with a cutting wheel or use a dye grinder in hard to reach spots, so you will get good penetration, if it is a real long crack you will want to space out your welds to stop warpage . 0.30 flux core or solid core should do a good job.
Not 100% sure but I think a 2.0 turbo manifold will fit your engine, I have an extra one but I plan experimenting on cutting off the flange and mounting it higher on the manifold to raise the turbo to cylinderhead height, but if it works out I will have one available.
Lewis... yes the 2.0 manifold will bolt to his 1.8 manifold, that's the good part. The bad part is it throws the alignment out of wack for everything that connects/bolts to the turbo. There's a post on here where I listed all dimensions and angles that would be changed.
I don't know what your "theroy" is for changing the height of the turbo to the heads relationship, but if you're into work for the sake of work, have a go at it... best of luck to you.

I have everything out of the car now and a fresh engine and new turbo to go back in so It shouldn't be that hard, if it was in the car I wouldn't even think about it.
I spoke to a turbo rebuilder and Garrett dealer with 16 years experience and he has seen lots of 1.8 and 2.0 turbo cars and knows there weak points, one issue is turbo oil drainage problems where the turbo is low, it relies on gravity to drain + has to overcome crank case pressure,oil can foam up in the drain tube and oil will be forced pass the turbo seals .I had that problem.The higher you can mount the turbo the better drainage it will have, it makes alot of sense to me.
Most of the newer c20ne 8v Corsa and Opel turbo cars over in Europe I see on You Tube all have cylinderhead height mounted turbo's, maybe they are on to something.
