Contradictory Check Engine Codes...
Monday, February 07, 2005 3:22 PM
Hi guys,

I've had my check engine light coming on for a while now. I can't remember which code it threw first (either 44 lean exhaust or 45 rich exhaust). Anyhow, one of the remedies listed in my Haynes manual was to replace the oxygen sensor but it said in the manual that this might not fix the problem. I decided to replace the 02 sensor. Of course, this didn't fix anything as a couple of km later the check engine light came on.

I just began to put it off until recently when my mileage started dropping about a 100 km per tank of gas. This began to worry me so I checked my codes today and found both code 44 and 45 present in the ECM's memory. I did reset the computer by pulling out the fuse so I know they are not old codes. Does anyone have any suggestions that may be of any help??

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your input! I'll have a look although in my Haynes manual it doesn't list it as a problem related to the codes my car threw (44 & 45).

Thanks!

44 and 45... how can it be both rich and lean??

Here's one way.
The codes won't set at the same time. If the engine runs rich for a while, you'll get the rich code as the ecm tries to pull fuel. If a plug gets fouled because the engine's so rich, it will stop firing or fire intermittently. This forces a a significant amount of unburnt oxygen into the exhaust. The O2 sensor will then see a lean condition and the ecm will add fuel.

Do you smell fuel around the car when it's warming up? Does the engine seem to have plenty of power? If you remove a spark plug, is it wet or very dark black? These are good clues about what may be happening. Your service manual should discuss placing the ecm in aldl mode using a jumper in the diagnostic connector. With the car running, the check engine light will alert you to whether the engine is running rich or lean based on the amount of time the light is on versus the amount of time the light is off. Idling will be ok, but be careful about driving the car in ALDL mode. And don't leave the jumper in for longer than you have to.

Good luck
