Im trying to remove a cylinder head on a 94 rs. This is the first time I have attempted this. I have some parts already removed ( sensors, alternator, EGR valve , vacuum hoses and lines ,). Im having problems removing certain parts like the power steering pump and the belt tensioner. Has anyone ever done this on the 2.2 and if so could you give me some pointers ? Thanks .

i did this about 2 weeks ago on a 94 2.2

you need to take off the PS pump first before that tensioner will come off. there are 3 bolts that you can reach by going through the holes in the PS pulley itself, so get them. then under the intake manifold, there is a support rod connecting the pump to the intake manifold. that needs to come off too. the final bolt is still inder the pump, and you can only reach it from under the car. do your best to find it. 5 bolts and the pump will come off. DONT disconnect the PS lines.

then the tensioner will unbolt from the head.

then, take off the exhaust manifold from the head. let it lean forward in the car.

then take off the intake plenum, and the TB as an assembly. you only need to separate these, and leave your throttle cables connected. dont take the lower intake manifold off the head, cause you dont need to and it makes the job alot longer.

once you have all this off, take off the valve cover, and take off the rocker arms, studs, pushrods and pushrod guideplates. lay them all out nicely somewhere and dont mix them up. they have to go back in the same spot.

then take off the head bolts. book says to replace each time you remove the head, and they are $20 at autozone.

at this point, you can lift the head up, and its about ready to come out of the car. there may be a few hoses left connected, but if you are just changing the head gasket, then you can get the head off enough to clean the deck, and put in the new gasket.

And just in case you didnt know (since you said its you first time) when you undo the bolts for the head you have to do it in a spiral pattern. Like do the top right one first, then the one below it , the the bottom right one, then the one above it, the the second one on the top furthest to the left, and then the one below it, until you have them all out. When putting it back on start you spiral pattern in the middle and work your way out. If you dont do this you can warp the head cause of the extreme pressure of the bolts pulling down on it.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to get the head off pretty easily . The only snag was the fuel lines.

When you remove the head bolts you'r supossta start in the middle then work outward in both directions so make sure you do that when you put it back together.

u probably should have it checked for straightness though. which means down time... but at least it'll get cleaned, pressure checked, and milled if needed.

Well I took the head to the shop yesterday and the head is no good. There are 2 cracks in the head. One is right by the spark plug hole and the other is inbetween the intake and exhaust valves . Both cracks are at #4 cylinder. This is the same cylinder where the head gasket broke at . I think I may have found a nother cylinder head though so the car shoulfd be running soon . Thanks
