BackFire from hell.

So today im driving to work at 7:30 am. it had been raining most of the night, and a light sprinkle this morning... when i'd hit the gas it would hisatate then start to go, slow down again, then *BOOM* back fire a few times.

in my head im thinking god, is it gonna make it to work. once i got it up past about 40 it quit. then as im driving home i hit the gas and everything seems cool. i punch it to see what it does and it felt like the motor just quit turning, and then *boom*. After the back fire it got going again.

What could this be?

it has never done this before. all the gaskets are fine i checked them. im thinking it may be the Spark Plugs (there almost a year old now), or the cat. I think that its more likely the cat, because i hear the back fire from the driverside floor near the gas pedals. (although the cat is in the middle). Does this just sound like it's clogged or do i have a bigger issue to deal with?

im really on my last ends with this car. so if it's under 150-200 to fix than im gonna fix it, but anything more you can forget about it.

I had a similar issue w/ my 91 Rs and it was the cat. Eventually it got so bad the car had no power. Not even enough to get it on the trailer to take it to the shop.

An easy way to test is to just unbolt the exhaust from the cat and see if it gets better.

no. Kentucky has an exhuast law. if it's louder than factory, its too loud.

and im already on my 4th warning from the local p.d. lol.

i just put 4 new spark plugs in (autolight basic) and it seemed to go away. but we'll see tomorrow. i'll probably go get a car anyways. its only 16years old now.

Sounds like a bad coil pack.

Thats what I was thinking. Or a bad ICM. The coil packs are actually pretty easy to replace, as well as the ICM.

Sounds ignition related, I agree with the guys above.

Ah damnit, that is the same thing happening to my 94 2.0 pontiac sunbird.
Does anyone have a replacement aftermarket Coil that they would suggest??

Thanks in advance,

problem solved. i was right and it ended up being the cat.

i even pulled the silencer outta the muffler after replacing the cat. and i can hear a big difference in the 2. but then again i did buy a high volume cat.

Hmmm...I'm going to have the Cat checked on my car and/or replaced. If it worked for you it should work for me too.

I'm still running the original equipment on my exhaust that came with the car....the Cat should be pretty badly off by now right? 157,000 miles??

Okay, do you have any places online that you would suggest I look?

The local shop wanted $245 dollars to change it out IF it was and OBD-1 car. If it was OBD-2 the CAT would have to be ordered and the price doubled to close to 500 dollars.

Is that true?
Cause I'm about to just put the thing on a lift, sawzall off the damn cat and clamp some connector pipe over the missing piece. Maryland only inspects emissions when you buy the car so I wouldn't have to worry about anything again.

Thank you,
