Where is the sending unit located? Haynes manual says how to taste it, but not where it is located...

The sending unit is in the gas tank. It attaches to the fuel pump if I remember correctly. It is normal for the gas gauge to move around while the car is operating. When the gas sloshes around in the tank it moves the float on the sending unit.

And how is that sending unit supposed to taste, according to haynes? Kinda like chicken or what?

Slightly bitter. If a sweet taste is detected it must be replaced.
Anyway , the way the tanks are shaped in these cars make the gauge inaccurate when you are running low.. a general rule i follow is when it hits 1/4 tank left fill er up.
plus they run about 400 bucks
