motor build idea

ok i noticed in the 2.0 FAQ that the turbo getrags were only made till 90, and the mpfi didn't come around till 92, so here's my question, say i get ahold of a turbo motor, obviously tbi, and i want to make it mpfi, is it possible to do this without comprimising the turbo's power, and posibly boost it? or is all this just a waste of time? or am i wrong and there are mpfi turbos? and would there be an advantage to going mpfi turbo over tbi turbo?

just thought i would ask, i'm sure there is somethign like this somewhere, but i searched in the search bar, and in that 2.0 FAQ and didn't really find anythign specificly answering my questions... so there you go

all the turbo motors had mpfi. there never was a tbi turbo motor.

ah, this makes alot more sense to me lol... so... since thats the case, if i can find a turbo motor in a junk yard, would it make sense that it would have a getrag on it? i've got the stick in my 89 bird, and i'm trying to decide wether it would be cost and power efficient to go turbo or upgrade to a v6, i suppose if i get a 6 i could probly throw a dual turbo setup on it, or super charge it if i feel like having someone manufacture alot of parts, but anyway, thats why i had to ask.

and the reason i asked about tbi turbos is because i know that chysler new yorkers had a tbi turbo for a while, ok well not 100% but for arguments sake i was in a shop class for about a yr and a half and we had two 86's and the top end looked semi identical except for a few additional pieces here and there for the turbo, i know mine (non-turbo) ran about 146 hp stock and the turbo ran anywhere from 189-205 hp stock

mind you my mind wasn't quite as deep into the workings of things as it is now, so, at this point if you can prove to me why i should or shouldn't do something then i'll be mighty greatful

The Getrag was installed because of the torque and power the engine produced, not because the engine had mpfi.

You can add a turbo to the mpfi engine or to the TBI engine. The mpfi engine is much easier, imo. In terms of wiring and engine management, the mpfi engine is easier as it's closer to the turbo engine configuration. The 93+ engine has higher compression, a slightly different cam, other differences which might make some differences in tuning. The stock turbo engine used a distributor and the mpfi engine is DIS, which means either having a chip made to work with DIS or installing a distributor.

All of this is in the archives here. It might take some work to find it, but it's here. Tyrin's 2.0 OHC faq may contain some of this info, also.

do the build i've wanted to do but couldn't afford. (4cyl wise)

2.2 block. built with new fordged pistons, rods, crank, cam and ARP bolts for the bottom end. IF its a 2.2 TBI swap on a 2.2 MPFI head/manifold/fuel pump and ecu. Port and polish it.

then buy a turbo kit for a pre 97 cavalier and put it on. and vrrrrom. you'll be runnin alot faster than you'd ever expect.

but this is like a 5-6k dolla build. for that you could pick up a used 3rd gen Z and swap on a supercharger and make the same power.... But it's not as cool as a 2g

ok sunv, give me an estimate how much power i'll make, and if i get a better job after the 20th, and it produces a decent amount of power (for me anyway) i'll look into it

my question to all the power nuts after that point would be, what else could i do to increase output to the wheels. and with the amount of power, what all would need to be replaced besides the block?

(2.2 mount up same as the 2.0?)

keep in mind i'm going for stick, and the bird i got is already a stick.
