I have read the posts regarding weatherstripping and have found that GM has now discontinued the rubber seals for my 1993 Z24 convertible. My windows leak quite a bit. In an hour or 2, I can easily fill a Tim Horton's large cup (I usually keep these in the car, for rain emergencies). I have asked many companies, both US and Canada, and no one seems to have any of this stuff. You would think they would make an aftermarket version of them, but I guess its so rarely needed that its not worth it. Maybe if I wait until the car is vintage they will finally come out with some.
I have checked with my local dealer and they have stated they can get it for me, but at a very high cost! There is no way I am paying those prices. I would rather get wet.
Here are the prices I received:
1. Frt windshield upper and upper side front $308.50
2. Upper side rear (2 required) $194.25 each x 2 = $388.50
3. Back rear (2 required) $253.25 each x 2 = $506.50
Total Cost: $1203.50 + tax
Isn't that just plain crazy?! I can make my own for that. Actually I was thinking of taking mine out, and maybe add a strip of cauking or a can of spray foam to the top of it, and placing it back. This may give it that extra ince of thinckness I need to have it snug back up to the window.
Does anyone else have a similar issue/resolution? Or possibly know of a dealer that sells this stuff cheaper?
Thanks,
David Schaefer

They aren't as rare as you lead on.
Any body shop can get any of those parts you need.
I have emailed 7 so far, and no one carries them. Here is an actual quote from a GM dealer I received today.
Quote:
The weatherstrips are discontinued from GM. However there is a warehouse I can get (new old stock) from. Looking at my catalogue there appears to be 5 separate weatherstrips around the door glass attached to the roof.
Here's a few others from various companies in US and Canada:

SOFFSEAL HAS NOTHING FOR A 93 CAVALIER AT THIS TIME.

Thank you for visiting our web site. We do not know of any source for this weatherstrip other than the dealer.
If you find a bodyshop that carries them for that year of car, or a website, let me know. I have searched/called everywhere. My only other option, is the wreckers.

I've found that convertibles often use similar pieces, even if they're different makes n models. Sometimes it takes some searching and looking at other cars to find what you need, or a piece that can be easily modified.
You can get the part nos for the GM parts then look on partsvoice (partsvoice.com) to find stocking dealers in the US. The "old parts warehouse" is a new name, new game from GM. Used to be they kept old parts for some amount of time then discarded them. Now the parts aren't discarded, they're sent to the "old parts warehouse" and the price is marked up.
If the weatherstrip is out of sight, you might be able to use grease and silicone to rebuild it. Lay a bead of silicone on the clean weatherstrip and put grease on the metal where it meets the weatherstrip. Close the door/ top/ whatever and let the silicone cure for a while. When you open toe door/ top/ whatever back up, the silicone didn't stick to it. The results doesn't look pretty, but the method is good.

Yes, I have tried them. No luck there either. Thanks!

Wow, you have a black top as well? Thats part of the america series -- i have the red one! if not, your one of fifty V6 5 speeds...
Anyways, my '93 has similar problems, although my weatherstrip is okay. Is there enough adjustment in the convertible top mechanism to make it clear? maybe a bodyshop can adjust the top / door to make it clear?
If its totally gone, again, ASC converted lots of cars in the late 80's early 90's, mustangs, all the chryslers, and some foriegn cars. Take a look around....

Yup, I'm one of the 50 made. I bought it privately in 1999 with very low km's on it. It had about 75000km, hardly driven. I paid a good buck for it mind you, and actually just replaced the convertible top 2 weeks ago. Cost me $1600, since it has a glass back window as well.

Where is the adjustment? I have never had it adjusted, and the people that installed the top never mentioed it to me, when I told them it leaked.
My dealer says he can get the parts, but I'm not spending another $1300 just for the rubbers.
Thanks,
Dave
PS. I'm still looking.
Thats cool, i spent years looking for mine, and found it totaled, bought it with the whole front end smashed in and restored it...
anyways, as far as the 'adjustments' go, you can make the top latch down further by tightening up on the actual chrome plated hooks on the top assembly its self... i haven't had to do this yet on mine, but, i think a quick look with maybe a 3/8ths deep socket or 3/8ths wrench could have that figured out relatively quickly. its the two hooks that go into the 'plate' on the latching mechanism.

David, i was in the junkyard today and saw three 'verts, all with 'decent' weatherstripping. Which pieces do you need, i'll try and figure out how to take them off for you...

That's great! Where did you find them?
I definately need the passenger side window (both front and back), and
driver's side if possible. Also, I really need to get that bar with
the rubber on it, between the drivers side windows. The metal piece
and rubber are attached to the back window. I need the one for the
drivers side, as mine is starting to get rusty. They want like $300
to replace 1. I found the passenger side in the wreckers and replaced
it, but it was unfortunate that it didn't have the driver's side as
well.
Let me know, cause that would be great!
Thanks,
David
I'll try and get as many of these parts as i can -- i have no idea what they'll cost me, but i'll do the best i can and try to get pieces that you can use...

Hey,
I have been looking for weatherstrip[ping for my 93 Convertible RS and have had no luck either. Their is not even many convertibles up this way. If anyone finds a place that sells them and wont cost and arm and a leg I would love to here where you found them.
P.S On the topic of convertibles whats is the rough number of how many Black top convertibles that where made in 91-94? Most of the convertible cavys that I have seen both up her and in Pa where I use to live were white tops, mine was alsways the odd ball in town cuase it had a black top.
Thanks
Jeff

really? are you sure? Scruf's been looking for seals for his 88 since he bought it 4 years ago, and he's had no luck whatsoever.

I understand where he's coming from. It's been a year for me and still nothing yet.

I am not sure what the number is for those years, but I do know that my 1993, black top, 5 speed is one of 50 made in North America. Kind of coll I guess. I have seen a few other black tops, but they are all automatics.
Thanks,
David Schaefer

he gave up...if you DO come across seals, however, PM him about it. lord knows it would be nice to replace those seals.

Back from the dead.... I need the seals on both doors and for the little rear quarter windows... anybody had any luck yet?

Crap...... does scruff have a vert?
I am debating just getting rid of my side windows and making removable lexan to replace it for a good seal. May turn out to be much cheaper... still able to drive in the rain.... aluminum dash... roll cage... totally gutted... might as well.

yep, his second gen is a vert...and the weatherstripping is almost completely rotted away.
