How do I add an aftermarket tachometer to my 94 Sunbird LE coupe with just the speedometer?
Get the Sunpro tach...
Red - IGN on fusebox
White - Dash lights
Black - Ground
Green - couple places to wire it to...
you have to splice it into the white wire comming out of your computer.its a solid white wire
one of the places to do the green wire,- i wired it to my coil pack (white wire on back side) kinda hard to get to but not impossible, also, instead of wiring the white wire (from the tach) to the gauges, i ran that to the fuse box along with the power wire (red), so eveytime the car is on, the gauge light is on, i think its cooler that way,
everything 89Sunbird said would work fine, so there ya go man, just wondering though, where are u mounting it and how big is the tach?
but, there is somthing wrong with my tach, it redlines at 3k, it should be higher correct?(the tack reads 8k at max) maby i shouldnt run it from the coil pack, i dont know so please help me out as well(and yes it is on the 4cyl. setting)

I haven't bought a tachometer yet but I will be looking for one after I fix my bird up to 100% It's pretty solid plus it's my first 5-speed. I was consider mounting it in the riciest position possible. j/p But when I install my system in the bird the radio will be leaving out so I can possibly make a custom mount where the stock radio location is. That way I can install a shift light also but noone will know as I will Nite Shade the big orange light. I will only use the tach because my Solobarics will drown the engine completely. So that's why I need a shift light also (Need an excuse to have some rice)
yeah the stock stereo location is where mine and a couple other people's are, its a good spot!

Ok, 89Sunbird got all the definete wires correct, but, the signal wire (green) needs to be wired to the ECM. If you wire it to the ICM (ignition control module- coil packs), you will only be reading half the RPM, due to the type of ignition we have.
I'm not positive of the color of the wire at the ECM. As Aaron said, its white, but I'm only 100% certain its white on the 2.2 ECM (terminal B11 on the center connector). Since the Sunbird ECM is different, it may be a different wire. It may even be a different color. Just don't go hooking up to the first white wire you see, since there are probably 10-12 different white wires and you may cause some damage to the ECM or the tach.
Find someone who has hooked one up in the same car, or get a service manual to be certain.
Thanks for the heads up. When I get a tachometer I will definately post which wire it is.

Thats where I wired mine to! And I drilled a hole in the side of the HVAC unit and put it in there, so I can look down between teh wheel arms and see it...

does yours redline at 3k then also?

Thats what I was talking about when I said you would only be reading half the signal.
hey Ill tell you the easiest way to figure it out. call your local Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts amd ask them for the number to Sun Pro. Tell the tech what make and modle of your car and theyll tell you which wire it is
I shift at 3000....but Ive gotten it up to 7200
I think teh reason it redlines at 3000 is cause thats when the factory shioft light comes on cause thats when you should be shifting for best fuel economy. I dont think the 2.0 cuts the signal in half cause theres no way 89Sunbird had his 2.0 up to 14 400 and is still running that motor, lol
Nah he said 7200. He either over revved or seriously put the pedal to the metal so to speak.
JVC KD-SX8350, Powerbass 6x9's rear, have to find some decent 4" front speakers,
Two Solobarics 12L5 powered by a Legacy LA2070 (1200x2 max).
Soundstorm F100.4 powering the interior speakers.
Now it's time for engine work.
I was refering to what cahill was saying. he said it was red linning at 3000 unlike 6000 were its susposed to cause the coil cuts the signal in half, so if 89sunbird got up to 7200 at half signal he was really at 14 400.......see what I'm saying now?
sunbird must not cut the signal in half like the 2.2 does.
When I originally installed a tach in my car (2.2) it would read about 2900 at redline. That was at the coil pack (ICM). After I swapped it over the the ECM signal, it read about 5000 redline (which is just about correct). So, maybe its not exactly half. I guess I would have to see a circuit diagram for the 2.0 coilpack/ICM, since its a one piece deal.
well if youcould find out where exactl it woks perfect i woul appriciate it greatly!

Just go to the ECM cause we know for sure that works, I think it was a white wire with a blck stripe on it, I have the wiring diagrams, I'll check them later and get back to you.
