92 z24 problems, need some suggestions
Sunday, August 28, 2005 7:53 PM
I just bought a 92 Z24 3.1 auto , and it doesnt start, which i already knew before i bought it, so today when i was working on it a checked for spark, which it had on all the cylinders, so that ruled out the coils and ignition module. The check engine light does come on when i try to start the car and it doesnt go off. I remember there being a way to pull the codes using a paper clip, but i cant for the life of me remember how to do it. The car turns over fine. So my next step was see if it was getting gas, on the fuel rail where you prime the lines, i pushed that in and there was no fuel that came out so im thinking that the fuel pump could be the problem, but the engine did smell like it was flooded and the plugs had gas on them, so im looking for a few suggestions as to what to look for next. The guy i bought it off of said if he used starter fluid he could get it to start. Ive never had a fuel pump go bad so if someone has is this what happens?

when you try to start it does it sound like a pump kicking on right before the engine starts. if it doesn't make any sound then the fuel pump is shot its really easy to replace, go to any auto parts store and you can get one of the keys for the codes for free i know are parts stores do this. but good luck with it.

Theres normally like a humming sound when i start my 03 cav, and i didnt hear that on this one. The car has been sitting 1 1/2 years since this happen so it probably a good idea to drain the gas tank because on the gauge it reads full, and i shook the car to make sure there was gas in it. Almost everything is getting replaced, i just need to get it running first.

There is a test wire for the fuel pump behind the driver side strut tower. its just one wire sticking out with a grey connector on it, you can't miss it. Run a jumper wire from it to the positive terminal of the battery, you should be able to hear the pump running. If it doesnt.. the pump is bad.
It being a 92 is more than likely needs a pump. Mine went out last year and its a 94.

Hey had that problem and the thing with it is, it might be the pump but there is also a though in it being the MAP sensor or the Crank sensor because for some reason in the 3.1 engine they play tricks and nothing seem to be wrong but there the problem .
Good luck
