ok today started out nice car started perfect felt like going for a ride to stevenson which is about 20-30 miles it was raining.... my voltage light was on then if i turned my lights on they turned off and if i turned then off they went on.... if i would move the interior lighting the speedo went up and down... then it just died going like 80 speedo dropped to 0 checked everything.... batter connections were semi hot and a fuse-able link was blown at the starter... WTF could cause this... is my alt going or something or is it past going... also i have a yellow top optima battery.... if that matters

Dude that sounds like the computer just pouched on you
But it could just be the alternator and maybe a short,
sounds like the alternator.
i newer cars when the voltage isnt just right the computer goes crazy.
LOL its not the computer. Is your alt belt still on? if it snapped this would happen. or your alt died. or battery.
Whats a Cavalier?

Thats one of your problems... Yellow tops are WAYYYYYYY to powerful for your electrical system, you ONLY want to use these as a second battery that would power amps... When i was studying for my MECP Silver they hit on that very very hard... Optima Red is best in the front
IMO this sounds like your alternator isnt putting the right amperage out... so replace that... or find an alternator shop to recoil it to be a 200 Amp...
I also believe its your alternator; however (Why Do...) don't mock the fact of the possibility of the computer, believe it or not I have seen instances where a computer has malfunctioned and caused the "need" of more voltage than what it really does need. This is normally caused by (and it does seem odd) something like a box of magnets put on the passenger floorboard or someone trying to install there own performance chip without being the least bit careful. Trust me it can be done. Just an FYI. haha

Maybe the alternator got wet somehow causing the shorts.
