transmission and parking brake issues

i've always wondered what was wrong with my car but i never thought about posting until now... first thing i noticed with my car when i got it is that my car doesnt shift in drive unless ive been driving for a while, and when idle the exhaust sputters. Also my parking brake does absolutely nothing... i had my car on a jack to rotate my tires and the parking brake doent even slow the tires at all... i had my girlfriend push the brake and the left side would stop but i never cheked the right side...

The handbrake cable could be broken or out of adjustment.. the adjustment is on the rear axel.
Have you ever changed the tranny fluid?

Check the condition of the tranny fluid... it should be a bright pink.... if its not and its a dark red, or brown, you need to flush it... General Motors recomends this every 12,000 Miles.... sucks doesnt it.... i do mine every 30...

Also start your car, and put it in neutral... and check the level of the trans... you may be low... when i was low once when i made sharp curves it felt like i slipped out of gear... simple top off fixed that...

i found out that my kickdown cable was disconnected and now i just have to adjust the tv cable and it should work.. and my fluid was fine

problem may be solved, but im gonna throw this in here anyways

a flush will not fix a transmission problem. if your oil is dark and you are having a problem, there is a reason its dark. changing the oilk in a transmission wont replace the friction materials back on the clutch plates, or the broken teeth back on the gears. clean oil may unjam stuck valves, but there is something going on anyways to stick them up, and its gonna jam them up again. also, flushes can cause more damage that they do good. when you flush all that clean oil through, deposits break free and can jam up the valve body. this is why you do a pan drop service and change the fliter. with a flush, you dont change the filter, and thats like changing your engine oil and keeping the same dirty filter on there.

If you don't have a broken or frozen park brake cable First adjust the rear brakes before the cable adjustment.
