Odometer question.
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 4:18 PM
I just got a used instrument cluster from a junkyard and I'm wondering how to roll back the odometer. The original one had 160,000+ miles and the new one has 194,800+ miles. Any help is appreciated.

Legally, I think it has to be done by someone certified. Best bet is to call your local state police and ask them what to do about it.

In some states, the DMV will issue a document that states you changed the odometer and then they change your info accordingly. Or you could just disconnect the VSS for about 30k miles

I think you can switch the odometers out. Check on the back of both of them and make sure. I know if you try to roll it backwards a silver mark shows up between the numbers.

I was reading about the silver markers, which doesn't really matter to me as long as it works. I don't plan on selling my car in the first place, so having to worry about making sure the "original" miles on there isn't really an issue. And to get the other odometer off........I have no clue.

If you can change the cluster, you can probably figure out the odometer issue. Take one apart slowly for practice and you'll likely get it.

The most legal way is to save the receipt from the junkyard then mark the mileage at the time of change on a document stating the mileage on the odo is not actual. Does your state even require titles on a vehicle that old? Some don't.

I've had a heckuva fight trying to get "odometer in excess of mechanical limits" off the title of my Sunbird. If that's correct then the car has 1,200,000+ miles!

That may not work, seeing as I got the gauge cluster for free. But I'll try taking the other one apart to see what happens.

well, being the new odometer has more mialage than your current, you wouldnt get nailed for odometer fraud if you sold it.
