2.8 water pump/timing belt question
Wednesday, December 07, 2005 7:31 PM
First off I think that I am going to half to change my water pump. Is this going to be a very difficult task? any tricks?

along with the pump should i go ahead and change the timing belt on the car. it has 111K miles but I have only owned the car a few thousand miles and dont know much of the history.

It is not in a cavalier though it is an 89 oldsmobile ciera with the 2.8L

Replacing the water pump on a 2.8/3.1 is pretty easy. The hardest part is getting the bolts out of the pulley so you can pull the pump. I suggest leaving the belt on until you loosen the bolts, then pull the accessory belt and pull the pulley.

As for a timing belt, the 2.8/3.1 uses a timing chain, so no, you will not even touch it.

no your a long way from half way there. basicly all you remove to do the water pump is the 4 bolts in the pully and 5 bolts that hold the pump in place. i have done a water pump in 15 minutes.

timing chains in these motors arent a problem. my old 2.8l had 400k km on it when i pulled the motor out to put my built motor in. the timing chain had accepable play in it. now thats 400k km.

thanks for the help everyone. I may try doing it today after the grim task of being a paul bearer in 10 degree weather. hopefully i can feel my hands to work on it
