Idling problem
Friday, December 30, 2005 8:31 PM
I just bought a 1989 sunbird turbo .
It's idle is around 3000 rpm, then drops down to around 1900rpm's.
I just changed the IAC valve , and it went to 4000 rpm's at idle.
Do i need to disconnect my battery to reset my computer?

Could this be my TPS?

The turbo doesnt work, but the car runs fine, except for the idling problem.

Any help is good help.....

Sounds like you have bigger problems than the idle if the turbo isn't working. Check and see if you have any vacuum leaks. Those will sometimes make it run at higher rpms since the computer will try to compensate for the extra air. Is your check engine light on? Before throwing parts at it try pulling codes from it.

One good place to look for a vacuum leak or a broken vacuum hose is the wastegate controller since your turbo isn't working. I would also check to see if one of your vacuum lines slipped out of the bottom of the throttle body.

Ok i have replaced the tps.
IAC sensor works , i tested it at autozone.
Still idles at 4100 rpm's.

Throttle body is clean . I just made an eye exam..infront and behind the throttle blade looks clean.

Yeah i'm gonna check the codes after i reset the computer.

Thanks ill check under the throttle body, and wastegate controller.

Just checked my computer for codes...i didnt drive it around i let it run for a minute then turned it off .....i have no radiator fluid in it right now(long story)

the code went something like this: 1-22-----------1-22-----------1-22------------1-22---------- Over and Over...so i think theres no code as of now stored in the computer.

Guess ill bust out the propane..check for some vacuum leaks.

Yeah, that's a code 12 which means the computer is in diagnostic mode. You should have checked before reseting the computer.

yeah i was just messing with the map sensor and IAT sensor..while the car was running...it set the check engine light on...i just figured the codes (if any) would show up after a minute or two...but im narrowing this down to a vacuum leak....its probably the intake gasket..but im going to test some things first with propane.

When you change the IAC it needs to reset itself. If I'm not mistaken you need to drive it at 30 MPH or so for 5 minutes for the reset to occur. There's other ways to reset it but I'm not versed enough in them to guide you. Perhaps someone else can or a web search for "IAC reset"?
