ok, here is were i am standing. my dad has a 94 cavalier gt that is his everyday beater, and some how i got roped into trying to fix his ignition. some how he manages to @!#$ it up so that you gotta hold the ignition on for the car to run, when you let go fo the key, the car cuts off. now here is my question. instead of trying to find another key ignition, can or why cant i just install i generic key starter elsewere on the car and wire it up to get the car running? will this cause the steering wheel to lock without the key cylinder??? any help would be great
I would replace the ignition switch and be done with it. It is fairly easy to do.
he decided not to pull the steering wheel and he just ripped off the cover. but yes we ended up replacing the switch. thanks for the help tho
The real switch down the colume needs to be reajusted. It's most likely the problem , if the key still turns as far and as freely as before ? As for a "starter switch" they are fairly easy it's just that with locking steering you will still need the key, or disable the locking system.
Before you do anything else I'd try to move the switch and re-align it.
