My key won't come out of the ignition, any ideas why? It'll turn and what not but it won't pull out.

thanks,
Jeff

1 of 2 things.... while moving your steering wheel back and forth try turning the key to the off position.. and 2 I'm assuming this is an auto, while turning the key fiddle with the auto shifter by putting it down to N and back up to P and then jiggle the key out.. If these don't work you may need a new tumbler.

i was gonna say that too...either its still in gear or the wheel is locked...therefore locking the key...try those first.

The tumblers can have problems after many, many uses. I've replaced a few that have glued themselves to the key, and it's not a cheap job. I spent many, many hours trying to prevent the cylinder in my 93 VL from "eating" the key. I used graphite, lock lube, compressed ait (to blow out all the brass that accumulates over the years), brake parts cleaner, various light oils. Everything worked a little, but from the day the key first started to stick it was never really right. I finally replaced the entire steering column when I changed the interior last spring.

You might be able to work it back and forth and with a *lot* of patience the key might eventually come out. But you risk getting the key stuck halfway, where it won't come out or go back in. Then you can't even start the car! You might want to get the tools and parts ready to change the cylinder if nothing else works.

Good luck.

also a little bit of FYI. if you have alot of weight on your keys that are hanging from the ignition this will also mess your whole ignition up as well. so if you do have alot of stuff on your key chain. you may want to reduce the weight.

Your ignition switch might be done too. It isnt hard to do, but you will have to take off the steering wheel. Mine just had this problem before i parked it.

ok, I put on an aftermarket shift knob (yes i know its pointless on an auto but w/e) and when i took it off and messed around with the white pole and wiggled the shaft back and forth it pulled out, but i really had to mess with it and i tried it again and it was hit and miss every time. Its kinda like the wire that runs to the cylinder from the shifter is loose or something. I can feel it moving but only sometimes does the key come out.
and yes it does start

thanks for all the replies,
Jeff
