Hi there,
My car is a 94 3.1L V-6 Sunbird GT. My problem is that the fan never comes on. I removed it and checked that it was working by powering directly from my battery. I changed the sending unit which was screwed in right under the thermostat housing and the relay which was mounted on the firewall but it still won't work. I'm thinking that it may be a wiring issue or the ECM but last I checked I had no code. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You will not get a code for it. There is another sensor that turns your fan on and off. Change it or wire the fan through a relay and a switched power source to make it come on when the ignition is on.
No the sensor that you changed is right, the one under the thermostat, Its extremely possible that you have another bad one, new or not. I'd try to unplugg it and let it get up to just past half and see if kicks on, if not its your wiring to the fan. The ECM will kick ur fan on @ times when there is a bad signal from that sensor. But its not guranteed. Try that if it gets up near 3/4 Shut it down. The wiring for the fan is pretty simple. Where it comes into the wiring harness near the Coil pack check it out. I think its a brown and black wire ( the ones to the fan.) Obviously check fuses. Seriously pull em all and take a look, ive been through wiring after i've check fuses and... def a blow fuses after all the playin around. Hookin the fan up direct is an option, some people do it and there happy with it but its just another quirk to driving ur car. Hooking it up accessory makes warming up in the cold weather harder, and on a switch u sometimes forget to untill its already a lilttle warm. Try this, and if not let me know i have 95% of the wiring. Ill look it over and we'll figure it out.

and you're sure your thermostat is good?
Have you checked at the relay base to confirm you have a 12volt supply there to run the fan?
This is the supply switched through when the relay energises.
The supply is from a fusible link so you should have +12volts there all the time, if not, you have a blown fusible link or a bad connection.
My info says you should have the power coming in on a RED wire and out on a BLACK/RED or BLACK wire to the fan.

If you havn't solved your prob. yet, you also need to know that when you access the self diagnosis sys. (check codes) it should turn on the fan. this is a good way of checking the relay and wiring sys. for the fan.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help guys. I ran out of time since I needed to car to get me back and forth to the office. I took it to an electromechanic and he informed me it was the fusible link. To be honest, I had no idea where it was or how to ckeck it. He also said that, although the fan was working on self power, it was the fan itself that was causing the wiring problems. All in all, he changed a bit of wire (fusible link) and the fan. Thanks again.
