MEM CAL CODES

Just wondering if anybody had any information on this subject..i cant find any.

I checked with GM and they cant find any info about mine (auwu) (3639)

He said the only one he can find for a 89 turbo m code 5-speed. ...is akdb

Just trying to figure a little bit out about this subject.

Shannen and I both somewhere have a chart of them, his may be more recent then mine.. I've seen AUWU's before. There are several I'd guess at least 6 -10 turbo 2.0 prom burns. As for what's different? obviously 5 speeds differ from autos, but GM also revises the programs when they want to make chanes to the way the car behaioves. I wanna say that my current tune is based off AKDB.. I'd need my laptop to know for usre.

I may be using AUWU or something clsoe for my base cal. Here's the info for AUWU:

BCC year is 1989

BCC= AUWU3639 Scan id= 3441 Part number= 16153408
Release date= 05/01/90 Engine size= 2.0 Trans Type= Manual trans
ECM/PCM: ECM #01227749
Used in cars: Pontiac
Possibly used in:
SUNBIRD SUNBIRD SE SUNBIRD GT
GRAND AM LE GRAND AM SE

Options:
With LT3 2.0L GAS 4 CYL MFI OHC TURBO
With MG1 MAN 5 SPD MUNCIE 76MM 3.50 1ST

This is also used in '90.

The parts guy can look up the latest calibration part no from the part number above. But that doesn't always work well. Believe it or not, the service department historically had better records regarding calibrations. They can tell you just what this calibration is superceded to and you can take that part no to the parts counter.

Here's a list of both OHC turbo 5 speed calibration part numbers used in 1989 and 1990. You can look them up on gmpartsdirect.com and see if either are good.

BCC= AKDB2546 Scan id= 2101 Part number= 16122545
BCC= AUWU3639 Scan id= 3441 Part number= 16153408

BTW I have a good copy of AUWU3639 if you need one.

I desperately want to learn how to play with OBD1 computer but I honestly have no idea what tools to use, where to find them or how to do it. Anybody want to clue me in before I just buy megasquirt?

Hey slowolej....Thanks alot!!!!!

Well right now , i think my auwu3639 is ok.

The reason i asked was because....
first i just bought this car, the guy gave me receipts for repairs done to it.

Well i happen to notice that one receipt says:
Problem" speedometer jumps and service engine light flashes"

Diagnosis : test system and replace ECM PN :16198263

Thats kind of a weird solution to the problem.....anyway....My speedo reads bout 20 mph to fast.
I thought that maybe the Memcal was switched from one with an automatic transmission.

I dont know..i guess ill switch the gauge or something.

The ecm could have been the problem. The speed signal goes from trans to ecm then from ecm to speedo. So a faulty ecm could cause an intermittent speed signal. But it was probably a dirty or loose pin in the connector and the tech just got lucky when he changed the ecm.

The 'bird speedo and tach both suffer from the same problem. They use what's called a "resistance-capacitance" circuit to calibrate the speedo. Over time the capacitor weakens and the speedo looses calibration. The problem is that the capacitor is somewhat special. It's made to be mostly unaffected by temperature. Finding new correct ones isn't real easy, at least for me. I have recalibrated a couple of speedos and tachometers by changing the resistance portion of the R-C circuit. Ya know, it worked on everyone else's gauges, but when I did mine the capacitor was so far gone that a year later it was out of calibration again. I ended up getting a used speedo then had to recalibrate that. Sheesh.

Anyway, good luck with the speedo.

Yeah I watch my tach i ive thought to myself "that doesn't seem right it seems like it sounds like like it should be reving higher than that."

Hmmm.. well where might someone like me find someone to calibrate my speedo and/or tach?

This is new news to me..man...thanks..again..my speedo doesn't skip or kump you know...it just revs up really fast i guess.

Could you calibrate my speedometer?
If so how much?

Thanx Shannen for looking that up.. I have hte info buried in a backup on my laptop.. ugh. My main PC's HD died.

My tach reads about 300 RPM low at the top end and about 50 RPM off at idle. My best suggestion is to get an aftermarket tach or a scan tool to use when you race and know how much your tach is off. 300 rpm off at the top end though I thinkm is something all our cars suffer from, GM may have even intended it. I shift at 6800 when I race though on the Tach, which is actually 6500 according to scan tools and external tachs. Car still pulls past that but I think the hp drops off shortly after and I'm a bit concerned about dropping a follower in teh valve train or busting stock rods so I play it safe and shift at factory redline.

Well i guess an aftermarket tach is on the way.

So i can get a used speedo and possibly fix this problem?

Hi, Gary.

I can check calibration for both the tach and speedo. I can adjust them, but as I said they don't always stay adjusted. And I can only calibrate them at a specific rpm or mph... if either gauge displays the range incorrectly like Protonus describes, I don't fix that. A used speedo may suffer from the same problem as the one you've got now. But it might not be as noticeable.

Protonus (and others), the shift light output of the manual trans ecm can be connected to a real light bulb. The stock chip can be calibrated so the shift light only comes on at wide open throttle and only at the desired rpm. Why spend $$?

Is there any aftermarket speedometers that will work?
