starter possibly flywheel issues

i have a 2.0 with a 3spd and for the past few weeks i think my starter has been going... ill turn the key and it wont turn over.... sometimes it will only take a few turns sometimes it takes 5 minutes... i bought a reman. starter and we jacked it up but didnt have enough room to do all the work and i couldnt get a lift in lab... so my friends (who are in auto. service @ my college) tried to diagnose it as i turned the key... we think either the starter or the flywheel is missing some teeth... now my question... shouldnt the stock flywheel be strong enough to take SOME damage... a few times when i tried to start it i heard grinding and thought it was the starter... could it be the flywheel??? if it is are there any stronger flywheels available??? thanks for any information...

If the engine turns over when you crank it, there aren't any teeth missing. If the starter freewheels, there are teeth missing, either on the starter or the flywheel. Your problem sounds more like the solenoid to me. It may even be as simple as the battery. Check the least difficult to check things first. Hook up a battery tester. If its good, check the solenoid out. If thats good, then you can worry about teeth missing.

well the teeth on the flywheel usually just dont fall off haha your starter might be loose and like moving away from the flywheel to do the starter the easiest way to get to the damn thing is to take off the intake manifold that sucks but isnt to hard lol i did it

hey guys i have a issue on my 91 Z24, sometimes when i goto start it, it wont even crank over but instead make a nasty ass noise,i believe the starter is spinning but either a section of the teeth is missing on the flexplate or perhaps the starter, im really hoping its the starter as i dont want to drop the tranny, could it be anything else?

justin why would u remove the intake manifold to replace the starter? im guessing the 2L is very similiar to my 2.2 in my 4dr and i didnt have to remove anyhting to get to the starter except for the dust sheild on the tranny

My car was doing the same thing...I took the battery to autozone, ran a test that showed it was low. Threw it on their charger, it wouldnt take a charge at all. So I bought a new Duralast battery and the car starts up like a champ now!

turns out it was the starter after all... that thing is a bitch to get out... it was only two bolts but i was on an alignment rack so we couldnt raise it high enough... and the bottom bolt took an hour to break free... and we broke the first socket... (but it was my schools)... and when we got the new starter in... turned it on.. no power... i was pissed... my instructor later found the problem after a near death experience... the power cord wasnt hooked up! the bird runs great now...
