mpfi vs sfi

Hi,

I am in the middle of a 2.0tbi to 3100 swap out of a 96 beretta. I am going to try to use the 3100 computer and all of its components. Can anyone tell me from experience what problems I will encounter that I will have to overcome and how to overcome them? One that I know of is that you have to trick the computer into thinking that there is a load for the transmission by rigging a resistor somewhere in the wiring. A good example of the help that I am asking for is if anyone can tell me where to put the resistor and what kind to put in. Also, amy other issues like if I will have to adjust my speedo or tachometer, or if I need to make a special circuit for the starter to work.

I think you have to re-pin the speedo line at the ECM...

dont even attempt it. you dont need a load for the pcm to think there is a tranny there, you need the sensors and solonoids. the tranny in the retta is electronicly controlled. the ecm comands the tranny to shift, then it needs to see that the tranny has shifter (by comparing engine rpm to vss signal). if it doesnt see what it should, it uts the vehicle in failsafe; the tranny will be stuck in 2nd gear and it will derate the engine. there is no way to fool the ecm into thinking it has that tranny there, it needs to be there or reprogram the pcm, wich isnt doable.

other issues- speedo wont work right along with the other gauges, the ecm will be in limp mode all the time. an obd2 swap is very tough, i wouldnt attempt it.

better idea would be get an 89 2.8l harness and ecm and run the 3100 off of that.

i would believe that if you would use the engine tranny and wirring harness from the same car and put it into a different platform it should work just fine.

The 2.8 or the 3.1 J car ecm will control the engine just fine. And you can get software to tune it, or have someone else do it. If you're using the electronic trans, you will need a pcm capable of controlling the trans. If not, don't be afraid to bail out on OBDII. It's more complex and less forgiving than OBDI. Look for a 2.8 / 3.1 J car in the junkyard for additional parts needed for the swap.
