Have a '94 Cav RS w/ 2.2 and auto that no longer shifts beyond first - and has metal shavings in the fluid...(Uh-oh!!
My buddy The Zen Mechanic thinks we can swap it ourselves with a junkyard tranny, but there are plenty of other probs, so it'll go back burner and we're looking at getting the wife another (3rd gen?) J for that 60 mi/day commute...
Anyone have a ballpark idea how much a tranny shop would charge for the swap?
T'anks...
I would say around 200 bucks. A few years ago it cost me 150 at a tranny shop. I brought in my tranny and they swaped them out in about 20 minutes.
im gonna call bs on that one. i am a re/re tech at a tranny shop. i know book time for an auto 3.1l is 5.4 hours. i can do them in about 3.5-4 hours depending on the rust. our shop rate is 87.50 canadian, works out to 472.50, plus shop supplies and tax.
swapping a tranny in 20 min? hmmm.
hey guys what that smell???

A RWD trans can be done that quick, provided the tech knows the vehicle, and has all the right tools. But a FWD can't be done that fast. I was hard pressed just to get the trans out in under an hour.
Last time I got a quote, it was $700 R and R, plus whatever parts were needed. The 3T40 is pretty easy to swap by yourself, in less than a weekend, I say go for it.
1st and 2nd gen j-bodies are fairly simple to swap the tranny in, about as simple as it gets in a fwd (ok, a 5 speed sprint is a bit easier). should be able to do it in a weekend yourself.
...a buddy and I are gonna swap with a boneyard tranny Sunday afternoon - gonna make a day out of it....
Boneyard tranny - $150
Kit fluid etc - $50
Case o' Bud and a little cash for my buddy - $130
